I was fortunate to find Eddie through a friend and one of his colleagues. He promptly responded to my initial contact and took the time to thoroughly explain the process during our first phone call. Eddie consistently replied to emails quickly and achieved the perfect resolution. I couldn't be happier with the excellent level of service.

Eddie went above and beyond any expectations I had for a lawyer. I hired Eddie after a bad experience with my previous representation during this same case. My custody case had already been ongoing for almost a year by the time I found Edward. After I had my initial consult with him, I knew he would fight for my children and I, and without a single doubt- and he did. He won my custody case for me!!! I could tell he was not just here to take every penny I had, he has integrity and prides himself with his services. Eddie let me do a lot of the tedious work throughout my case, saving me a significant amount of money. His communication and response time is immaculate- you would never know you were not his only client. He never made me feel like my questions or concerns were a burden or unimportant. Edward represented me through two, eight hour days at trial. He encouraged me on breaks throughout my testimony and cross-examination, which was reassuring when I had no idea what to expect. He always included me throughout my custody trial and kept me informed with any questions I had. I felt very prepared when it came time for me to provide my testimony to the court due to Edward's pretrial preparation. Eddie has a professional demeanor, dedicated work ethic, and is committed to all he serves. Edward is honest with his charges/ billing, and when any questions came up about any billing concerns, he was always willing to explain and help me understand. Eddie is also reasonable and easy to work with regarding payments. Eddie surpassed my expectations and without question, I would utilize him again in the future if needed. I have recommended Eddie to multiple people over the course of our eight month client-attorney relationship, and will continue to do so going forward. I cannot thank Eddie enough for his tenacity throughout my case, and for getting me the outcome I had wanted. Megan Alger

Never look for another lawyer again once you have worked with Eddie Fishman. Eddur is above and beyond any expectations you could have or thought. Very respectful, communication is on point, doesn't waste any time or beat around d the bush. He does exactly wha he says he is going to do. I've worked with him three times now and has always exceeded my expectations. Eddie is definitely the right choice and has me as a client for life. Thank you Eddie for everything and couldn't of made a better choice finding a Attorney then you. Absolutely amazing. Honestly no words can describe how great you are at what you do but once someone makes same decision I did by going with you then they will know exactly why won't ever need another Attorney again for anything.

I highly recommend Edward Fishman, J.D. I am not known for hyperbole and rarely give a rave review for anyone’s work. This is an exception. Eddie is a fantastic attorney. On May 25, 2023, my wife and I had our 37th wedding anniversary and on May 31, 2023, our divorce was final. When I found out my wife wanted a divorce, I secured Eddie’s services. I found him to be ethical, detail oriented, timely in his work, and skilled in protecting my interests. His fees were consistent with the time he devoted to my situation. As with many people who find themselves in the position I was in, I did not know much the legal process, what to expect, and how my life would be changing. Eddie was patient, direct, and able to guide me through the time his services were needed. It wasn’t easy work: a great deal of information needed to be gathered about the finances that occurred during a 37-year marriage. I sometimes cringed at what he expected me to validate, but over time, the rational for his requests became clear. We often need attorneys when we don’t expect to need them. It is my recommendation that if you find yourself in the situation like mine, you consider seeking legal services from Edward Fishman.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Winterset, Iowa?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
