Aline Pryor took my money and gave me nothing but more stress in return. She's friends with the other lawyers and she goes in and makes deals that are not in her clients best interest. Than when I started questioning her she quit my case right before we were scheduled to go to court. Waste of time and money. If you are looking for a lawyer to truly help than STAY AWAY FROM ALINE!!!

I would 100% agree with the other negative reviews. At the initial meeting, Aline and her assistant seemed very attentive and promising. However, the case became about the money than handling my case. Would agree that she was condescending and doesn't listen to her client who hired her. I also was tasked with putting together meaningless paperwork and providing background information. All of which was never used and it was clear she never read it. I did catch her in a lie about a discussing with the opposing attorney. When I questioned her I received a belittling email back. It's hard to switch lawyers when you have sunk $27K into the case. Save yourself time and money and look elsewhere. The experience with her was worse than than the reason I hired her. Worse decision...

I can't say enough great things about this attorney. She was always straightforward with me about my case and the potential outcomes. AWFUL! All this is to her is a paycheck. She’s a BULLY! She will act promising and motivated upfront. Once she has your money, she will belittle you, disrespect you, treat you as though you are beneath her. She doesn’t listen to what you have to say, and in the off chance she does, she will treat you as though you’re stupid. Watch who you’re in cases with as the opposing counsel if you choose Aline as your representation. She has “working relationships” as her firm will call it, with other attorneys. She will make deals with them and try and make them happy, before she’ll listen to you, her client! When she gets tired of a case she starts to withdraw and lose interest. If she doesn’t like what you’re asking of her, she’ll threaten to stay on as your lawyer. She’s over priced, just to treat you like trash! I honestly have no idea how she’s in business. I DO NOT recommend her!

This woman is horrible. She is condescending and will play like she is a bull dog, all while wracking up your bill. When push comes to shove, she buckles and does not stand up to other attorneys. She cost me nearly $25K for only a few weeks worth of work, having me doing meaningless paperwork and background work, all to immediately walk into trial and push me into settlement. SHE IS A BULLY, but not against the opposing side. She gave me advice that almost ended up being detrimental. When I was angry at the outcome, she sent me the most awful email (that she clearly spent hours on---and probably charged ME for) that was full of lies trying to cover herself on what probably could have been brought up to the bar (according to several other lawyers I talked to). I didn't have the time or energy to pursue bringing anything against her and in all honesty, she was such a horrible person, I was just glad not to deal with her again. I strongly discourage anyone from using her. When you are going through what is probably a very traumatic event....trust me, you do not want her by your side or in your wallet.

Jeff Dehon was my first experience working with a lawyer. I was surprised at how approachable he was and how responsive he was to my questions. When calling his office, he answers the phone. He helped me with my divorce with compassion and thoughtfulness. He explained every step along the way and worked swiftly for resolution. During the same time period, we were selling our house and there was a cash settlement issue that needed immediate attention and he stepped up to the plate. If I ever need a lawyer again, I would definitely hire him!

Jeff is one of the best attorneys I have met. He helped us with a very high conflict custody case, that involved multiple states. He is highly ethical and even when the other attorney seemed to do some unethical things, always stood above and followed the law. He was reachable whenever we needed to talk to him. Our case took a year and a half to resolve. Sometimes things take a while to work it's way through the court system. During that entire year and a half he always replied to emails and calls promptly, and often calmed us down when we got worked up about the case. I would recommend Mr. Dehon to anyone looking for a great attorney, that will work hard and is there for his clients.

Mr. Dehon was extremely diligent and supportive during the entire process of divorce. He worked tirelessly to make sure that my interests were protected. I was able to reach him even for emergencies which is a rarity today. My case was very complicated and he made sure that the best possible outcome was reached for myself and my children. He is completely honest and will give you a fair assessment of what the outcome might be so that you are able to make decisions based on fact. I consider myself extremely fortunate that I was able to find him and will forever be thankful that I did.

We live in Olathe and needed a "good" family law lawyer. We hired a local law firm who seemed to have the right stuff. 3/4 of the way through our family court matter, we had to fire our lawyer. We heard about Denise Ramos through a work associate and made the call. We met with her and she made us feel so comfortable. She didn't mince words about the status of our case or the potential for a hopeful outcome, since our previous lawyer mucked things up procedurally from a legal perspective. Regardless, she was tough and aggressive in the court room. She presented case law and rulings that had the opposition attorney's head spinning. Denise is a great advocate for her clients and represents and fights for their well-being -- AND -- she's a really nice woman! We strongly recommend her law firm!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kansas City, Kansas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
