Going through a divorce is never easy under any circumstance. Knowing you have to find someone you can work with that will have your best interest at heart and you can trust. I choose to have Beth Walsh represent me with my divorce case. I had read reviews on Beth before hiring her and chose to go with her in my divorce case. She is amazing to work with. I found her to be great with communication and explained everything thoroughly every step of the process. Her and her paralegal are amazing with getting back to you in very timely manner and very efficient and super caring the whole way through. You will be great hands having Beth represent you.

Recently, I hired Christopher Pickering to handle a delicate and difficult legal matter, and he obtained a most advantageous result. I practiced law for 25 years, and I have worked on numerous matters with the assistance of Christopher Pickering over the course of decades. There are precious few truly talented attorneys. Chris is one of them. His technical capability is surpassed only by his intuition, which is truly remarkable. He cares about his clients and he focuses on what matters in the course of pursuing a legal result. He is truly an ornament to the profession.

Wish I could give more stars than 5! Dana Fahey was thorough, attentive, caring and professional. She was mindful in keeping expenses to a minimum and was an advocate for me and my sons in obtaining proper child support and medical reimbursement from their father. I appreciate her so much and if I ever need any legal assistance again, I will not hesitate in hiring her again.

Ms. Wade was the best referral which I have ever received. She seemingly knows everything about aircraft compliance, tax, and sales issues and problem areas. She was overly fair with her billing (compared to what I pay my civil practice attorneys.

Aaron went above and beyond to help me in my time of need. Aaron was a former classmate of mine who responded to a panic posting that I placed on my facebook the day my ex husband took my son. Having not spoken to him in years- he still gave up his entire weekend along with his partner to help me to get my son back. He also came to my aid on another occasion. He is dedicated, loyal, hard working and an all around amazing person. I highly recommend him.

We really liked working with this attorney. He explained to us exactly what we needed to do and what would take place on his part. We went to our appointment one day earlier than we should of but he fortunately had a cancellation at that time and gladly worked us in. Once we did everything he told us things went along smoothly. There were no surprises because if he wasn't there in court he would make sure another attorney would be there to represent us. I would highly recommend his services to anyone who had to file bankruptcy. It was good doing business with him because he took a lot of burdens off of our shoulders. He was very professional doing what he did for my wife and I.

Doug did a great job of representing us during our bankruptcy. He never made me feel dumb for asking questions or sending him emails with questions. He was very professional and very thorough in explain how everything would work and what our options were. Filing for bankruptcy is something that is not easy but I felt at ease with Doug representing us. I have even had to contact him months after the discharge and he has been quick to respond and answer my questions

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Olathe, Kansas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
