Katie McClaflin is out of this world! Her unlimited knowledge, extensive experience, phenomenal commitment and very hard work are unparalleled. At a time when everything was literally falling apart, when all hope felt completely lost, she was confident of an outcome I never even imagined to be remotely possible. She is never intimidated, always professional and deeply cares about what is most important! She is never afraid to speak her mind, even when it was not what I wanted to hear. To me, Katie is not just a terrific attorney, she is an amazing mentor, advisor, friend, and above all a life saver, not in the medical sense, but certainly in every other aspect of life! I am eternally grateful for what she does. I would never want anyone else representing me. She is the one and only!

Kyle Barscewski recently represented me in a divorce case. I extensively researched family law attorneys, and Kyle was recommended to me. I could not have asked for a better lawyer! Kyle is smart and talented and guided me through the entire process. He not only kept me informed, but also involved in the case, which was very important to me. Kyle was always prompt in replying, took the time to hear my concerns, answered my many questions, and clearly outlined the options. I appreciate that he was straightforward and explained what to expect – positive and negative. I had complete confidence in Kyle and fully trusted him. I don’t believe there is another attorney who would have worked as hard as he did on my case. Without hesitation, I give Kyle my highest recommendation!

Mr. Townsend handled a case for me that involved a past client that was not happy with my companies services. The case could have been very costly for myself/company. Mr. Townsend's knowledge of the law and his power to negotiate helped put me into a position that saved my company thousand of dollars. He is hard working and extremely knowledgeable on the law. It was great to have Mike in my corner during this fight.

Paths Law Firm, without question, is the wisest choice for help with my Family's Elder Law Legal needs. From the initial informational meeting, I knew paths Law Firm was going to be an asset in developing a "Path" that my Family could follow to meet our Trust, and Power of Attorney needs. Russell's understanding and care about our Family's situation and his unprecedented knowledge of the correct legal requirements were only the beginning. He was so kind that he even made a house call.

We were long overdue in creating an estate plan, and Kyle was exactly the type of attorney we were looking for to get that done. He helped pare down what can be a complicated process into an easily digestible one. He was organized and responsive, and the end result is a thorough plan that will make it much easier on our loved ones when we pass (which hopefully, is not anytime soon). I highly recommend Kyle for your estate planning needs.

As my first introduction to Kyle four years ago, when he completely revamped an old Trust, this point of contact was excellent. I needed to do a few small amendment updates. He was very timely and even worked me in to have things "in order" before leaving on a longer trip. Very professional and detail oriented. Would recommend him to anyone.

My husband and I worked with Kyle Krull on our Estate Planning needs and he was wonderful. He brought up things we never even thought of! He is extremely knowledgeable, helpful and very patient with questions. We went back and forth several times before we nailed down our plans and Kyle never made us feel bad for making changes. You won't be sorry if you work with him.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Overland Park, Kansas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
