Dan Smith is one of the best. He's not only a top shelf attorney, he's also a good and decent human being - these last two characteristics are highly valued, but non-essential in today's legal world.

Travelling from a recreational state to Kansas and was stopped by the police(racial profiling) and had a good amount of edibles and marijuana for personal use. Was detained and received a number from an attorney from one of the staff who worked at the compound where my vehicle was towed who was charging 3X the amount of what I paid for so my wife decided to get online and find an attorney and she found Attorney Leininger and his resume is impeccable. I was stressing so much as I do not live in that state and was facing jail time and was in jeopardy of losing employment. After speaking with him, I was able to set up a payment plan and his assistant Katie is amazing. I was late one time and was able to continue to receive services. I didn't feel the need to worry or really call as my much because my wife wanted me to check in almost every week and there was no need to because that's how much I had faith in him due to the emails and conversations I would have with him and sure enough, when it was time to go to court, all I had to do was zoom in and the outcome was to pay a probation cost and complete a substance abuse evaluation and THAT'S IT.....NOTHING ELSE. He's the truth and this is not my first rodeo unfortunately dealing with this system. Kudos to my wife for finding him and kudos to the whole staff and if he ever reads this, THANK YOU AGAIN.

After unfortunately needing help, I reached out to Brian who was able to handle my case easily and provided me assistance in getting an outcome that wouldn't be on my record. He helps make sure you are aware of what's happening and communicates well. Knowledgable about the area courts from his experience and history with the system and expertly navigates the system in your favor.

Mr. Leininger was my lawyer for a DUI I received in early 2019. He went through my options, helped me throughout the process and was the ultimate professional. My biggest compliment is he kept his promises. That is hard to find these days and I appreciate it. 5* and highly recommend to anyone in Kansas who needs help.

When I did my online search for a local DUI lawyer, Mr Leininger was one of the 1st names I found. He was the 1st 1 to call me back. When I saw him in his office he sat down with me and explained the entire situation. He really put me at ease during a very stressful time. He and his staff kept me up-to-date the entire time. I cannot say enough great things about Mr. Leininger. He is a very knowledgeable, caring, detail oriented and hardworking individual. In my case, he was able to get a very favorable result. I unequivocally recommend his services to anyone who needs them

I will start off by saying Melinda is a awesome, trustworthy lawyer. I can go on and on about how great a lawyer Melinda is. But i cant because i want have enough room to write it all. I sat down and talk with a lot of lawyer about my case before i pick Melinda to be my lawyer. When i first sat down with Melinda it was something about Melinda that stood out from all the other lawyer. The thing that stood out the most to me was that Melinda cared about her clients. So i would say to anyone that if your looking for a good lawyer you want go wrong with Melinda Clark-Sann she the best.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Overland Park, Kansas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
