I would like to state that if you need a lawyer Rick Morefield is the way to go. He worked with my family in the loss of my daughter. He was so compassionate and understanding and such a very hard worker. Our case lasted over 7 years due to covid and he did not once give up on us even though he was not getting paid for all of the work that he was putting in for us. He came up with all kinds of strategies to win our case. Rick took time to explain legal terms with us and made us aware of what he was doing and how he planned to win our case. I was very impressed on how knowledgeable he was about the law. He was very easy to get in touch with and would call you back quickly, I would not hesitate to use him again if needed.

There is so much that I can say about Rick and his team but nothing would express my gratitude level towards them. Rick is so caring and intelligent. He puts everything he has towards helping get the best outcome for his clients. He doesnt look at what is best for him at all, he purely cares for his clients. He was with me from day one in the hospital, he kept in touch with me throughout the entire case and it was not a 30 day situation. It took me 2 years due to the level of my injuries and having to end my medical care so we could see just how much I could gain back after my car accident. He was there for me when I needed to cry, when I needed to yell and everything in between. He was my voice of reason and knowing that my cases are over now I am more heartbroken just knowing that I will not have that constant contact as I have grown so fond of him. I know we will keep in touch because he is such a caring person. Watching him work during mediation, come up with scenarios and charts to help explain things so that you get the best outcome was amazing to see, he is the smartest person I have ever met. If you are looking for a firm that actually cares about you and will do whats best for your family then he is your attorney. He is 1000% better than any review could ever say.

This was my first experence needing a lawyer and I couldn't have made a better choice. He made me feel comfortable at all times, whether it was on the phone or in person. Most of our discussions were by phone. If he wasn't available at that time, he would always call back and not leave me hanging. He work every angle and kept informed with solid information at all times. He was knowledgeable about all aspects of our suit. I never had to worry about his honesty or question his work ethic which proved to be very satisfying. I am thankful for choosing a GREAT lawyer.

I reached out to Ms. Kingston on two different occasions regarding situations with two different employers. On both occasions, Ms. Kingston analyzed all of the facts involved and put together brilliant strategies and responses. Subsequently, both situations were resolved by Ms. Kingston without need for further litigation. However, if the situations had moved forward, I have no doubts that I was very well positioned for very favorable outcomes in court. Ms. Kingston is extremely knowledgeable and knows the law backwards and forwards. Also, you will find that Ms. Kingston actually cares and will take time to explain your situation with all possible ramifications. 5 star rating plus for Ms. Kingston. If you find yourself in need of legal help regarding employment law, you owe it to yourself to contact Ms. Kingston first. Truly amazing!

Paths Law Firm, without question, is the wisest choice for help with my Family's Elder Law Legal needs. From the initial informational meeting, I knew paths Law Firm was going to be an asset in developing a "Path" that my Family could follow to meet our Trust, and Power of Attorney needs. Russell's understanding and care about our Family's situation and his unprecedented knowledge of the correct legal requirements were only the beginning. He was so kind that he even made a house call.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Overland Park, Kansas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
