I can't recommend Mindy Wheeler highly enough! From the very first consultation, it was clear that she is exceptionally organized and precise in her work. Her attention to detail ensured that no aspect of my case was overlooked. What truly sets her apart is her vast knowledge of the law and her unwavering commitment to fighting for the best interests of her clients. She took the time to explain every step of the process and always kept me informed, which made me feel confident and supported throughout. Her dedication and passion for her work are evident, and I genuinely felt that she cared about my case as if it were her own. If you are looking for an attorney who will advocate fiercely on your behalf while providing expert guidance, look no further than Mindy Wheeler. She deserves every bit of this five-star rating!

Peggs Wheeler assisted my grandfather with estate planning, and I covered all associated financial costs. At the time of the transaction, my family and I asked that I digital copy be sent to me digitally so that I could keep record, as well. We were told that a copy of the document would be uploaded to their practice management portal, to which I would receive a client login to access documents at anytime. Fast forward to today when I attempted to access and send a copy of the document to my grandfather’s insurance broker, on behalf of my family. The document had not been uploaded. I called the practice for assistance but was met with a very callous and condescending office manager, who apparently was disgusted with my lack of knowledge on estate planning (I’m only 33, my apologies for my lack of knowledge). She cut me off at every attempt I had of asking valid questions. I finally pointed out how rude she as being, only to be told that she didn’t have time to speak to me and hung the phone up. I was able to call back and speak to an attorney and get help with the issue. It think that it bears stating that the level of customer service and assistance that I received from the office manager is never acceptable. Especially given the fact that I maintained my sense of professionalism throughout a call where the same was not being reciprocated. I mentioned how disappointing my initial interactions with the office manager were, to which he repeatedly brushed off my concerns. While I appreciate his intervention, as the family member of a client and the actual payee, my concerns felt invalidated. I would ask that in the future, Peggs Wheeler do better with the care of their treatment of others. I understand that the employee may have had a bad day that maybe had nothing to with me, but it’s never okay to treat others the way that I was.

2
Responsive and communicative with clients
“Definitely recommend Ms Wheeler!! We were just not close proximity but she answered every question!”
Cons

Lack of responsiveness and communication with clients

2

Poor customer service and unprofessional behavior from staff
“I was met with a very callous and condescending office manager, who apparently was disgusted with my lack of knowledge on estate planning (I'm only 33, my apologies for my lack of knowledge). I first discovered Tamar when I was a passenger in a car that was involved in an accident. She was very thorough, kind, understanding and effective. That was about 16 years ago I think. Since then she has represented a friend in a workers compensation case and two other friends in car accidents and everyone has been very satisfied with her work. She is not only a great lawyer but she is honest and responds to her clients. Having been in business for myself for many years and used many different types of attorneys, Tamara is the most effective I have ever been associated with and would highly recommend her. No issues with her whatsoever. Great person also. Rick in wichita ks

Tamara Collins has had several Medicaid clients over the years, and we often discussed the issues relating to Medicaid subrogation under KSA 39-719. Tamara worked in a way that allowed everyone to benefit from settlements and payouts to Medicaid that were equitable for all involved. Tamara is a very good attorney, and it has been a pleasure to work with her over the years.

Richard and the rest of the staff at Devaughn-James are great people to work with. They gave me accurate expectations for the outcome of my case, explained the entire process in a way that was easy to understand, and gave good answers with quick responses to all of my questions. What I most appreciated is that his staff was very flexible to work with and easy to contact, both by phone & by email. They kept me well informed throughout the entire process, checked in with me periodically to ask how I was recovering from my injuries, and were patient with me in allowing me to balance my own personal & work life with getting them the paperwork from my doctors & everything else they needed from me to process my case. I would highly recommend this lawyer, and if I am ever in the position to need his services I would definitely work with him again.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Wichita, Kansas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
