Mr. Winchell has been my attorney for the past six years. When I was seeking out an attorney for my divorce I went to a friend who I trust ethically in law and asked who they thought would be the most ethical attorney who wouldn't waste my time and money on unnecessary courtroom theatrics, as well as spend time arguing semantics which have nothing to do with the law or the divorce. I made it clear I had absolutely nothing to hide and that truth would win the day. Mr. Winchell took my case, after which I watched him methodically use truth, experience, and his expert knowledge of the law to tear apart the lies and deceptions of one of the most crooked attorneys I have ever witnessed. This was also after getting ripped off by two previous attorneys. There were times I was tempted to argue emotion, like so many do, but he was clear in letting me know the law and truth are what mattered, and that is what would be focused on. I can't imagine how much my fees would have been if he had let me use him as my therapist like so many try to do with attorneys. Short of tragedy on his end of things, I can't imagine having another attorney in my corner when I need to go to family court to answer more ridiculous and erroneous motions filed by my ex. Mr. Winchell is forthright about what he needs to know, and do, on behalf of his clients. To some this may come across as being abrupt, but I can assure you, anytime he needs to talk and you to be quiet is time which is saving you money and working in your favor. Not only is Mr. WInchell competent and astute, he also has one of the best administrators working behind the scenes to make sure you have the best help available to represent you in what can be a very unpleasant setting. I highly recommend Mr. Winchell if you are wanting someone who knows the law in family court, and won't waste your time and money letting your emotions rule the day. If you need therapy, then go hire a therapist, but if you want the best representation you can find in a court of law in Bullitt County, then Mr. Winchell is your man. I have recommended numerous people to him over the years, and will continue to do so with the full confidence that should they retain him, they won't be disappointed in the least.

Jennifer was my attorney for 3 years and she would be today had I not moved to Shelby County. She and her staff were professional and knowledgeable of the family court system in Bullitt County. She made an extremely difficult custody and divorce tolerable and the outcome successful. Jennifer is a cost effective attorney who always operated with my interests in mind and heart. The work she did for me still holds strong today. I could not have asked for more. Thank you Jennifer!

The staff was so very helpful to me in a difficult time in my life. My husband was failing, and I needed guidance. Emily was gracious and knowledgeable, she and her staff guided me through months of dealing with things as they cropped up. I am handicapped and cannot drive, so they came to my home! Professionals, yes, but also compassionate.

We worked with Hayden and Peyton is closing my father's estate. We brought them an extremely complicated situation and from the initial meeting they were able to calm us and let us know "we got this". They were able to guide us through the court filings and formal letters that needed to be prepared and filed. They were available to us all hours and helped through the final details. I highly recommend Sweat & Griffee Law Firm to help you with all probate and estate issues. Thank you guys for your professionalism in getting our situation resolved!!

Hayden changed my life, I had been working hard to get my son back and it wouldn't have been possible without him. He was always there to talk day or night whenever I had questions or was just worried or concerned about anything. He treated me like a human being and supported me every step of the way. I can honestly say he became more of a friend and not just my lawyer. I would highly recommend Hayden to anyone. He went above and beyond for me and I can't thank him enough. What seemed impossible he helped make possible. Thank you Hayden from the bottom of my heart I appreciate everything you've done for me and my family.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Shepherdsville, Kentucky?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
