My family and I will never recover from the gross negligence Joshua Tardy showed in my case. He took our sizable retainer and made a lot of promises and told a lot of stories. He didn’t follow through on a single promise and treated myself and my family like we were not a priority. He was unorganized, unprofessional and untrustworthy. He couldn’t follow through on what other attorneys have said are simple courses of action. Unless he can benefit from your case politically do not hire this firm. I still have not received a refund or any official billing from this firm. Mythical billable hours. Do not hire.

I recommend you look at the more recent reviews of this firm before engaging with them. If they were ever good in the past, they are currently a mess. Tons of turn over in personnel translates into a headache for clients if you want to get anything done. You can expect to pay hundreds of dollars even for boiler plate type products with slow turn-around, and good luck if their accounting folks get things right. Seriously, look elsewhere if you don't want to waste time and money (and possibly some sanity).

David took my case on pro bono, we had an hour consultation and then he took care of everything and I didn't have to do anything major, he was the driving force with my case. He was very caring, diligent, thorough, professional, intelligent, organized, and helped me through a very difficult time. He was able to guide me through the process and he was an exceptional speaker when we were in the court room and when I was emotional he made sure I was ok and he wouldn't let things continue until I gained my composure. He is the best lawyer that I have ever dealt iwth and whenever I have a concern or question regarding any situation or circumstance regarding any legal situation, I give him a call and he always has a time to speak with me and he always guides me on what direction I should take. I gained a great friend out of this and it is nice to know he is a phone call away. Thank you again Dave for being such a great person and caring about people and making sure they are getting the proper help they deserve and doing it with open arms and showing people that they because they are not able to continue working because of their situation that they are still great people and that things will get better in time. He was definitely an inspiration and helped very much.

Gideon Asen is an excellent firm that is helping people all across Maine. They represented my friend’s family in a medial malpractice suit and were able to help them get the just compensation they deserved. You honestly couldn’t ask for better attorneys and I would recommend Ben and Taylor to anyone who needs a strong advocate on their side.

Brett Baber epitomized the word ‘professional’ throughout our eighteen month case period. He was always professional in the sense that his experience immediately commanded respect yet there was always a bit of humility and kindness from him. Brett was immediately empathetic to what our injuries and needs were, and never have we ever hired someone who worked harder on our behalf than he. Brett’s approach to discussing our options was thorough yet extremely easy to understand. When our case had reached a point where we needed to make some serious decisions as to how to move forward, he laid out all of our options and then ranked them by which he felt held the best chances of success for us. We really appreciated how he described what was happening in clear terminology and without any technical legal jargon. We needed an attorney throughout the most painful physical and emotional time we could ever have ever imagined. In our lives Through it all, Brett Baber always held our best interests at heart. This is the type of lawyer who can redeem the occupation from any infamous negativity. We could not be prouder to have been represented for our legal needs by Brett Baber and the team at Lanham Blackwell & Baber.

We were served for an action in Maine concerning an animal, something other attorneys refused to join. We live in California, adding another obstacle. During our panic to find an attorney in Maine, we contacted Brett who immediately calmed our fears. We saw a sincere concern for our situation. We were impressed with his knowledge and recommendations. He was responsive to any & all our inquiries and always kept us informed along the way. Now that we are finished with the action, we actually miss talking with Brett. An exceptional human being.

I was in a motor vehicle accident, and was in treatment for over a year. Brett stayed in contact with me from the first time I met with him through the end. I never felt alone through the process, and was able to focus on recovery. He answered all my questions, not matter how silly they might have been. He kept me informed, and up to date with the process. Couldn't imagine going through that time without him and his staff.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bangor, Maine?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
