Pros
1
Excellent communication and responsiveness from the lawyers and their staff
“Alex and Judy are an excellent team. All of the steps in the process were carefully and meticulously explained. I was kept apprised of the communication from and to the insurance company throughout the negotiation by Judy in a timely manner.”
2
Knowledgeable, professional, and effective legal representation
“Alex went above and beyond to make my experience good. He always offered explanations to me that were in layman's terms. He analyzed my case and offered a clear, concise and coordinated approach to solving the problem I came to him with.”
3
Compassionate and caring approach towards clients
“At one of life's most challenging crossroads, I was represented by Teresa (Tess) Farley from Shaheen & Gordon. She quickly understood my highest priorities and measured her counsel against those priorities throughout our time together. She brings a unique set of attributes and talents to her work with clients. She powerfully blends professionalism, warmth, humor, and assertiveness.”
4
Successful outcomes and client satisfaction
“The outcome of the legal matter was very good. I was completely satisfied with this attorney / co-worker team. I would recommend them for sure.”
5
Reasonable and transparent pricing
“Not only was he completely successful in having all charges dropped and my record clearled but was extremely reasonable in costs.”
Cons
1
Disorganized and unprepared handling of cases
“Mr Evans was recommended to me when I needed help with a family issue and was low on funds because he offers bargain rates. wasn't worth it. Endedup losing more money because I had to go hire another attorney to take over. Time had been lost by trying to work with Mr Evans. He's SO disorganized and comes from a personal angry place about his own life that clouded our interactions and his advice. It was awful and I didn't know how awful until I hired another attorney.”
2
Lack of responsiveness and communication
“Numerous attempts to get a return phone call”

I was very grateful to have attorney Roger Brunelle Jr to represent my significant other who was wrongfully jailed because of a comment made by his own brother and was being charged with a felony. When Attorney Brunelle started our case he started his research on my significant other and we won our case within 2 months time. He wasted no time at all. He really took our “very unusual “ (quote from the judge) case and took a personal interest in our lives. I’m so grateful for him. Also he has gone above and beyond after the trial was over to check in with us to make sure we were doing well and said we could contact him anytime if questions come up. I want so many people to hear about this attorney-HE IS AN AMAZING PERSON WITH A KIND HEART. I thank you again .

Roger worked diligently on my case for three and a half years. From start to finish, he was nothing but the highest level of professionalism. Very punctual, very honest, and very deliberate. Didn’t sugar coat anything at anytime. Kept it 100%. In the end, Roger secured me the absolute best out come in a very serious situation. I wouldn’t have had anyone else handle this case. Roger is the best of the best. Don’t hesitate to call him for your legal issues!

Best lawyer ever and I was referred by my friend to Attorney Roger Brunelle. My case could not have had a better outcome and I am certain this is due to Roger's impressive mix of strong qualities. Not only is he extremely competent and professional,. He kindly guided me through the legal process, answered all of my questions and left me feeling very supported. I could not be any more confident in Roger's outstanding capacity as an attorney and I could not recommend him any more highly. Thank you

What makes Cynthia Arn stand apart from others in her field is her approachability, kindness, and patience. Unlike other attorney's I've hired, she is never condescending, and she treated us with respect throughout the entire immigration/green card process. In addition, Craig Bellgraph, a paralegal at the firm, is outstanding. It was obvious that both Cynthia and Craig are known and well-respected by the US Immigration officials in Portland.

If I had to recommend a lawyer to anyone, it would definitely be Amanda without any hesitation. Amanda took our case (my sister and I)- we came from Syria and it was a complicated one. Amanda always went above and beyond and showed us support throughout the whole process. Amanda communicated very well, and was very professional, honest and helped us in every step of our case. Our case could have taken a way longer time without Amanda’s expertise. Our case is approved and we couldn’t be more thankful.

What an amazing professional attorney. Just because she doesn't charge high rates doesn't mean she isn't working as hard as the expensive firms.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Maine?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
