Pros
1
Compassionate and caring attorneys who genuinely listen to clients' needs and concerns
“The lawyers I worked with were supportive and knowledgeable. I do wish they had been willing to take on the State Police as well as the local police, I think together we could have made a statement that could have helped others who are having a mental health crisis, but I did not have the money to pursue that and they could not see winning a civil case to earn back enough money to compensate themselves. I understand that, however still wished something could have come of this. The DA lied in their final report and no one seems to care. Great people though who expect to get paid and I understand that. I am thankful for the time they gave.”
2
Highly professional, responsive, and thorough in handling cases
“From start to finish, my experience with Attorney Brennan and his staff was extremely positive. I was listened to, received quick feedback and information when I requested it, and I feel like my needs were well taken care of and considered throughout the entire legal process.”
3
Successful track record in achieving favorable outcomes for clients
“Travis and his team were phenomenal, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. My fiancé was misdiagnosed about 3 years ago. Travis and his team worked tirelessly to achieve an incredible outcome.”
4
Attorneys go above and beyond to support clients during difficult times
“Jodi Nofsinger was unfailingly pleasant, compassionate, and clear. Throughout our long journey together, we understood what was happening and what we might expect to happen. During these difficult times, we had huge confidence in her as our advocate every minute. She saved our day.”
5
Firm values client relationships and maintains strong communication throughout the process
“Anyone knows that a lawsuit takes time...that's a given. During that time frame we fast became friends with everyone we were in contact with at Berman & Simmons and our case has closed, successfully exactly a year ago and....we are 'still' friends.”

For the past 3.5 years, my wife and I have worked with an outstanding team at Berman & Simmons. On September 11, 2020, my wife suffered a preventable brain aneurysm that caused a stroke. Our elder care lawyer, Patti Nelson-Reade, referred us to Jodi Nofsinger at Berman & Simmons, who took on our case. Over the next 3.5 years, Jodi and her team dedicated themselves to learning every detail about my wife and me. They have been incredibly caring and compassionate, with the goal of securing full compensation for the damages caused by this tragic and preventable event. The legal journey has been hard, long, and tedious, but this amazing team has been with us every step of the way. They have become our friends, and I look forward to teaching Jodi how to fly fish in the spring, as she has requested. Another key member of the team, litigation paralegal Deb, has worked closely with me, scheduling calls and meetings while even being considerate of the demands that are put on my daily schedule. I wholeheartedly recommend Berman & Simmons to anyone in need of legal assistance. They have taken exceptional care of my wife and me from start to finish, and we are forever grateful for their unwavering professionalism and hard work. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Attorney Travis Brennan was so great to speak with! He was very thorough in his explanation, listened to my concerns, and though I did not have a valid malpractice case, he referred me to an attorney who could assist in another area! The paralegals were extremely polite and professional! Top knotch, definitely recommend!

My family hired the firm of Berman & Simmons, Trial Attorney for one of the most important cases for our family. Charles P. Hehmeyer, was the lead attorney handling our case. The professionalism, the attention to the smallest detail, was always paramount in all aspects of interaction with each and every family member from the very young as well as teenagers to all adults in our family. The firms office locations in Bangor, Lewiston and Portland made it easily accessible for all our family members. I would profoundly recommend Charles Hehmeyer and his firm of Berman & Simmons to anyone needing help in navigating legal proceedings. Fisher-Fifield-Solow Family

I was represented by attorney Nofsinger and was incredibly pleased with the thoroughness, transparency, and compassion provided by her and her team. Before officially becoming a client Jodi advised me on how to begin the settlement process myself and avoid getting lawyers involved. When that proved fruitless she and her team did a wonderful job with my case, which took over 4 years to settle. They were quick to respond to questions and always kept me on the loop on what was happening. I wouldn’t hesitate to reach out to her and Berman & Simmons if I need future legal counsel.

In my experience working with one of Perkins Thompson's software lawyers, he presented facts that allowed our business to sustain a competitive advantage while understanding the legal impact for the decisions we needed to make. Having him on our side was like having in-house counsel ready and willing to assist with a number of legal issues. When seeking a lawyer, it's incredibly important to have someone that is not only trustworthy but also experienced in the specific area of law that is needed. Our executive team would be happy to call on Perkins Thompson for our business related legal needs in the future.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Maine?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
