After reviewing multiple criminal lawyers, and doing as much research on law I could handle, I finally took one of my friends recommendation and trusted Derek to fight my case. Due to my profession it was critical I had the right lawyer fighting for me. This is the best move I could have made as Derek provided me with an outstanding result. He also communicated with me in an understanding manner, Derek put the time into the case and was definitely skilled in his profession. Everyone seemed to know that he wasn’t the run of the mill guy when we walked into court, even the judge. The entire process was handled in a top shelf manner. Regardless of how embarrassed and ashamed I was to be in my situation, Derek did not judge me and actually helped ease my anxiety. Thanks to him I was given a second chance. Thank you for helping me get through a really hard time in my life!

Derek is an amazing lawyer I have used him for 4 of my cases because apparently I’m one who has to learn the hard way. But honestly he actually takes the time to get to know you and connect with you on a personal level. There isn’t anything negative to be said about him. He goes above and beyond when it comes to his job there isn’t another lawyer out there like this guy he is one of a kind.

Derek is an awesome lawyer and someone who I would consider a friend, not because because he takes your case personal, but he gets to know you just as much as you get to know him. Derek did a phenomenal job handling my case and I could talk to him anytime especially after business hours. He kept in contact with me throughout the entire time and was straight forward with my options and even made me feel comfortable if I didn't take a plea agreement. I truly feel that he was in it for my best interest and not his own gain. What a stand up guy.

I had no idea who to hire as an attorney.. I spoke with a few lawyers and as soon as I spoke with Derek Howell I knew he was the perfect lawyer ! My case was very crazy I would say dwi , drugs , and a weapon . This was also my second time involved with the law FYI . I was scared beyond wits ! Just talking to Mr. Howell a couple times I could tell I had picked the right lawyer . He answered all questions and then some . He went above and beyond for me and I owe him my gratitude . I highly recommend Derek Howell !!!

Jim Quinn is an all-around great person and a wonderful attorney. He takes time to answer all of your questions and will fight to ensure you get what you deserve. My divorce case presented some challenges due to a difficult opposing party. Mr. Quinn would not waver from my case goals when the opposing party tried to drag the case on and when the opposing party decided to represent himself and call Mr. Quinn constantly. He was honest with me and took time to explain things, from the time we met at the consultation to the completion of my case. He also refused to let me accept less then I deserved from the divorce when I felt like giving up. He will fight for you and make you feel like you are more than just a pawn in the legal system. He also genuinely cares for his clients. I highly recommend Jim Quinn to anyone needing an attorney.

A few years ago I found James online after consulting with numerous military lawyers and civilian lawyers, everyone told me either my case was too complicated or I'd fight a battle I wouldn't win and they wanted no parts of it. After consulting with James he gave me this look and said "I won't give up on you, so don't give up on me." He stayed true to his words, and made me feel as if I was his top priority even though he was working other cases. I NEVER not once feel like he lost interest in my case or as if I was put on the back burner. Every time I called him, he answered or called me back within minutes. It was a point in my case where we had been to court a few times and all of the judges said the same thing and I felt I was never going to win, so I called james and expressed my concern and was basically ready to give up and quit, he told me not to worry about a thing, he was not letting me give up and he wasn't giving up on me. He allowed me to make payments when I could, which took a huge amount of stress of my life financially. He didn't change the way he interacted with me and he worked just as hard. In the end he did exactly what he told me he was going to do. I am a single father who now has physical custody of two beautiful twin girls. I can never say thank you enough James. If you are considering hiring James, I strongly encouraged you to do so without hesitation, whatever problems you may have, wether it be financial, personal, physical or anything just communicate it with him and I know for a fact that he'll be willing to work with your specific situation.

He went above and beyond to make sure that we all had all the information needed to make very informed decisions about our case. He is an exceptional lawyer and he cares. What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Abingdon, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
