We worked with Shannon Hayden and I would strongly recommend her to my family and friends. She was attentive to deadlines she provided sage advice to keep our case on track. She delivered a win. I highly recommend this firm and specifically Shannon.

Jonathan Kagan did an excellent job handling reorganization of our LLC. Everything was explained clearly and completed in a very timely manner. Mr Kagan and his associate, Meagan Bogerson also recently helped me with the set up of a new business entity. They made a complex process easy for me to follow and got it all done accurately and expeditiously. I has been a pleasure to work with them.

Unfortunately, I had a horrible experience with Shannon Hayden an associate of this firm, that I will NEVER forget. This attorney was given the opportunity to represent my fathers probated estate in litigation where an unknown heir returned 18 years after his death, notice to unknown heirs, creditors and notice of appointment. During the pre-trial conference Shannon insisted that she contact the opposing party to log into zoom as the Judge grew impatient with their extreme tardiness. (Although she was told by one of the defendants that their intentions was not to show up). The mediator Judge was minutes away from making a decision/ruling. However, Shannon called the defendants and warned them of their time and assisted the defendants to login to the conference. In addition to explaining to the Judge a law pertaining to my case when an "unknown heir" isn't found during the probate process of an Estate. I informed Shannon, of my unhappiness with her representation and received a phone call at 1am leading into the next morning. (I didn't answer) I was then informed the following Monday, the need to withdraw as my counsel and I agreed. During the Estate trial litigation, Shannon request to withdraw from the case and went into a breakout room with a different Judge presiding over the case for at least 15 minutes. (unknown conversation) The trial ended in an unfavorable ruling and my father's estate was fumbled, the appeal was denied and now in the hands of a complete stranger. From my understanding a lawyer is to provide competent representation to their client and provide skillful representation to their CLIENT. Unfortunately, this did not occur. My new counsel tried calling Shannon several times for information on the case. Nonetheless, phone calls were ignored and never returned but Shannon has managed to stay updated with my case (although she withdrew from the case) to the point she emailed me a copy of the "Denied Appeal and Motion", obviously knowing the courts indeed sent a true copy to the home of the appellant. In my opinion to taunt me with the fact that I lost my fathers estate.

Kagan Stern represent my company on many corporate matters. Michael Marinello and Jonathan Kagan were successful in defending my company at trial in a technology case. Michael and Jonathan were extremely professional, experienced and proved to be superior litigators. Michael navigated the technological nuances of the case very well. I am very happy to have Kagan Stern representing my company.

I hired Mr. McCarthy for my divorce. He is very clear in explaining all legal issues, documents, ramifications, and best practices. He is incredibly personable, but is also fierce in protecting his client's interests. In a very emotional conflict I am glad I hired him, as he guided me to reasonable solutions and ultimately my goal. He is very clear in monetary expenses, and has told me when something is just not worth paying him for, when there are no positive outcomes or benefits. He is concise and thorough in documentation, which again saves time and money, and can make a difficult time over much more quickly.

I hired Michael as a result of filing for separation and ultimately divorce. Michael was extremely helpful and thorough throughout the process of planning, negotiating and carrying out the terms of the divorce and ensuring my best interests were managed. He was knowledgeable about the processes and clear with direction on the proceedings. I have recommended Michael to friends and would continue to do so in the future.

Kevin assisted us with the resolution of a claim against a particularly difficult party who insisted on appealing multiple rulings against them. What should have been settled by reasonable business people or a single hearing about the facts of the case, the defendant and his attorney insisted on using every means possible to delay and draw out the process. Although this wasn't a huge claim, the issue was based on fraudulent billing by the defendant and we wanted to see it through the entire process on a moral basis. Kevin did a great job getting the defendant to court and making our side of the case clear. We prevailed and Kevin also assisted in collecting the judgement after the defendant began stalling after the judgement was rendered. I highly recommend Kevin for your business law concerns!

My neighbor was claiming ownership of a large piece of my property and had built a fence on it. Kevin Best review the claim with county property records and agree that I had ownership of the property. He review my property rights with me and suggest a plan of action to remove the fence and on keeping her from excising ownership of it. The plan was successful and the encroach fence was removed. Currently she is staying off the property. Kevin was more then helpful when the Home Ownership Association question the fence removal. His knowledge of HOA convention rules were very helpful in responding to the Community Association. I would hire Kevin again.

My experience with the Law Office of Kevin J. Best has been a very positive one and I plan on maintaining a professional relationship with this attorney. I had been handling my particular case myself only to have it appealed (by the person suing me) twice and moved to different courts. The person has now filed their third and final appeal (allowed) with the court of appeals. I found myself in a situation where legal representation was a must. I had ten days to respond in writing to the writ of certiorari for the court of appeals. I needed an attorney-fast! I googled attorneys and found Kevin J. Best, located in Annapolis. I was pleasantly surprised when Mr. Best personally answered the phone. I was immediately able to discuss my very complicated/time sensitive situation. I scheduled an immediate office appointment (2 hours) and fees were discussed during our phone conversation so there were no surprises. I felt Mr. Best was very reasonable. During the office visit Mr. Best very clearly explained and advised me with examples on how to respond to the writ of certiorari. Since I already had a rough draft of a response and Mr. Best was not familiar with the case to date he advised me to follow through myself to keep the cost down. I worked on my response at home-emailed it to Mr. Best the next day. Within hours he revised it and put it into legal format and emailed it back to me all prepared and ready to mail to the court. This was above and beyond my expectations. All I had left to do was print, make copies and certify mail it to the court. I made the court deadline with days to spare and I filed the paperwork appropriately as required by this court's rules and guidelines- which I had no idea about. All with the help of my new attorney- Kevin J. Best. If needed Mr. Best will represent me at the court of appeals.

I hired Caroline when I was charged with offenses in Anne Arundel County. I was charged by an ex for things that I didn’t do. Caroline was excellent from the beginning. She stayed in contact with me promptly throughout the entire process. She told me exactly what I needed to do and represented me perfectly. All of my charges were dismissed by the prosecutor. Thank god I hired Caroline because I am out of all of the trouble and moving on with my life.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Annapolis, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
