I want to share my outstanding experience working with Kevin Schaeffer. It was an absolute pleasure communicating with him during the entire process of my divorce. He was able to make a very unpleasant matter much easier to handle and delivered a very favorable result for me in the end. I highly recommend him for any of your legal needs.

Mr. Schaeffer came highly recommended to me, and I was very pleased with the service he provided, and the outcomes achieved. There were several times during the divorce process where I was extremely stressed, and he was able to put me at ease with his calm demeanor and confident reassurance that he had things under control. Cost was certainly a concern for me, but Mr. Schaeffer was very fair in his billing, offloaded non-critical tasks to lower-priced staff, and achieved a result that ultimately saved me time, heartache, and money. I have already recommended him to friends, and will continue to do so.

MR. SCHAEFFER WAS INCREDIBLE IN HANDLING MY CASE. I WAS KEPT INFORMED ABOUT THE EVENTS THAT WERE TAKING PLACE WITH MY CASE AT ALL TIMES. HE WAS ALWAYS PROMPT IN RETURNING PHONE CALLS AND EMAILS. HE WAS WELL INFORMED ON THE FACTS OF MY CASE AND ITS STANDING WITH THE COURT. HE DID EXTENSIVE RESEARCH TO OBTAIN ANY CASE LAW THAT PERTAINED TO THE FACTS OF MY CASE. HE WAS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE MANY ASPECTS CONCERNING MY CASE, INCLUDING TAX LAWS, REAL ESTATE LAWS, ALIMONY AWARDS AND SETTLEMENT ISSUES. HE WAS PROMPT WITH HIS MEETINGS WITH ME AS WELL AS FILINGS WITH THE COURT AND ATTENDANCE AT ANY HEARINGS OR TRIALS. HE WAS FAIR AND ACCURATE WITH HIS BILLING PRACTICES. THERE WAS NEVER A QUESTION THAT HIS PURPOSE WAS TO OBTAIN AN OUTCOME THAT WAS IN MY BEST INTEREST. HE CONSULTED WITH OTHER ATTORNEYS IN HIS FIRM ABOUT THEIR OPINION AND EXPERIENCE WITH THE FACTS OF MY CASE. I WAS WELL INFORMED ABOUT ANY ACTIVITY THAT TRANSPIRED WITH THE ATTORNEY ON THE OPPOSING SIDE. I WAS ENCOURAGED TO PROVIDE AS MUCH INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION AS POSSIBLE TO ASSIST WITH MY CASE. HE WAS VERY PERSONABLE AND EASY TO TALK TO WHENEVER I CONTACTED OR MET WITH HIM. I FELT THAT I HAD HIS FULL ATTENTION AND HE WAS WELL PREPARED WHENEVER I HAD MEETINGS, CONFERENCES, HEARINGS WITH HIM. HE WAS WELL PREPARED FOR MY TRIALS. HE IS VERY PROFESSIONAL BUT AT THE SAME TIME VERY APPROACHABLE. I BELIEVE HE IS FULLY COMMITTED TO SERVING HIS CLIENTS TO THE BEST OF HIS ABILITY.

As an out-of-state grandparent, I realize it would have been almost impossible to secure visitation with my grandchild unless I obtained legal counsel. John Warren was essential to my getting court-stipulated visitation and I am forever grateful. He never gave up in the face of tremendous opposition and handled things long distance when I was unable to travel. I can not recommend him highly enough!

Seventeen years ago I met John due to the child visitation/support issues I faced. He took everything I had to say into consideration and explained my rights as a parent while keeping the best interest of the kids in mind. He even indicated that his services may not be needed but that he would be willing to assist if I was uncomfortable speaking in front of the judge. Hiring him as my attorney was the best decision I made since legal cases can get very complicated and confusing for the average person. He obtained all he promised, never misled me, and worked so hard, which I am forever grateful for. Ever since then, John has been there for my family and I whenever we need advice or representation, never fails to benefit our situation. As of right now, seventeen years later, I am back seeking his legal advice in hopes of terminating my case now that my kids have been emancipated.

I hired Mr. McCarthy for my divorce. He is very clear in explaining all legal issues, documents, ramifications, and best practices. He is incredibly personable, but is also fierce in protecting his client's interests. In a very emotional conflict I am glad I hired him, as he guided me to reasonable solutions and ultimately my goal. He is very clear in monetary expenses, and has told me when something is just not worth paying him for, when there are no positive outcomes or benefits. He is concise and thorough in documentation, which again saves time and money, and can make a difficult time over much more quickly.

I hired Michael as a result of filing for separation and ultimately divorce. Michael was extremely helpful and thorough throughout the process of planning, negotiating and carrying out the terms of the divorce and ensuring my best interests were managed. He was knowledgeable about the processes and clear with direction on the proceedings. I have recommended Michael to friends and would continue to do so in the future.

Excellent lawyer. All charges dropped. Caroline got me in and out of court quickly. Caroline used to be a prosecutor and she talked to the prosecutor for my case and got the charges dismissed easily. Thank God.

I hired Caroline when I was charged with offenses in Anne Arundel County. I was charged by an ex for things that I didn’t do. Caroline was excellent from the beginning. She stayed in contact with me promptly throughout the entire process. She told me exactly what I needed to do and represented me perfectly. All of my charges were dismissed by the prosecutor. Thank god I hired Caroline because I am out of all of the trouble and moving on with my life.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Annapolis, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
