Was referred by a family member to discuss options for filing Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. I called the number provided on the website and was contacted by a male whom simply states he was calling from "Heather Dickerson's Bankruptcy". I explained my situation that I live with my gf/fiance, never been married and a home was purchased by her in July 2022 and the mortgage under her name. She pays the monthly mortgage and put my name on the title of the home for survivorship purposes because we have kids together. He proceeded to ask info about her income and occupation which he says was relevant to my case, yet we aren't married, I gave a ballpark figure. He then proceeded to ask about the house and was there any equity, I advised the home showed current list price on Zillow and he then asked if I could see how much was owed on the mortgage and he would call back same day, never did. I had the info ready, no call, I reached out Monday to get an update, recieved a text back stating I couldn't be represented for a Chapter 7, only Chapter 13 based on my GIRLFRIEND'S income because we lived together, never asked for any of the mortgage info, specific income or anything and didn't respond to any other questions or bother to call, waste of time, don't use!

I had a few people use him for chapter 7, and they said he was fantastic. So, I decided to use him for a chapter 13. Once the filing on the chapter 13 the communication becomes delayed, they will not pick up the phone when you call and are slow to respond to emails. It will take days before you get a response.

When dealing with the aspect of possible foreclosure and you hire someone who you trust to help you every step of the way especially when there were so many other remedies that he could have offered but took advantage of our vulnerabilities instead now I'm in 100 times debt then I was going into my chapter 13 I believe whole heartedly they work for the creditors and lawyers on the opposite side of your debts there is no other way to explain the treatment from his firm 100% of the time he barely responded and each time acted as though How dare you ask about the case attitude each conversation where you knew you were in the right but instead of hearing you out and working for a solution he berated you and questioned you instead of helping you he helped the cteditors.STAY AWAY all you will get is 100% more debt and he gets his pay I felt more hopeless after dealing with his firm then I did going in on top of that had to save my home by myself because I can never trust another law firm after dealing with Thaddeus Holmquist and his staff.please if you want to save your home and get out of debt and you absolutely need an attorney you deserve better so Please stay away.

Another assistant answered the phone, brusquely asked a few questions then "looked up my home value" and said it was $600,000 (don't know where he found that; Zillow says $325,000). Told me I didn't qualify, the feds would sell my house to pay off my bills, and brushed me off. Guess he figured I couldn't afford their fees. D- for business manners.

I agree with earlier review. After money is exchanged, there is no communication. I've been waiting 4 months to get discharged from a chapter 13. No response to emails. Bad communication. Would like to move on with my life.

The Taylor law firm has proven to be professional and caring about the needs of the people. I spoke with Mr Taylor and other staff members over the phone regarding a paperwork that I needed to submit to the court and they were very patient and kind to handled the paperwork. I am very pleased and grateful for their time, and the guidance that they provided. You will not be disappointed with their services.

I must say that The Taylor Firm is… to say the best and efficient in the judicial process of Baltimore City is an absolute understatement!!!! I was arrested held without bail. I’d hired the firm and within less than a month’s time, I was released without any bail review or court proceedings. As GOD as my witness… out of nowhere I was told to pack up!!!! Not to mention throughout the duration of this incarceration, the team was amazingly informative and empathetic. This firm is a firm that will go far and beyond to get the job done! They WILL work together to work for you. If you’d ask me to describe the Firm… I’d say I’d bet my bottom dollar on The Taylor Firm vs The Cochran Firm any day.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Baltimore, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
