Tom Neary is truly a blessing to our family. I was referred to Richard by AVVO after searching for local attorneys in my local area. He agreed to meet with me that same evening at 3pm, then began representation for my rights in the case the next day. Tom also represented my son and daughter in separate cases that were ultimately successful. There are few attorney's left that genuinely care about their clients. Tom has over 20 years of experience as an attorney in multiple states. He knows the legal system, and will protect your rights and fight for victory in your case. Tom is amazingly thorough, he has continuously promised and delivered exactly as expected. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication Tom, you went above and beyond to win cases for my family over the past three years. You are a rare gem - we appreciate you more than you know!

I hired Tom after I was in a serious car accident. The other side was denying it was their fault and refusing to pay for my injuries. Tom represented me against the other driver through a long trial before a jury. He gave me information at every step and made the process understandable and less scary. At the end, we won and I got a fair verdict. I am very happy with the work he did for me.

When I had an accident that was not my fault, I was really unsure how to approach settlement with the insurance company. From my view, it was very complicated with loss of time at work, personal injury and car repairs. Thomas Neary knows how to quickly negotiate proper and fitting compensation and make things right. He is a man of integrity and truly cares for his clients. I would have no problem recommending him to anyone who requires legal representation. Thank you to the Law Office of Thomas E Neary for their help in my time of need!

I reached out to Mr. Neary upon an unexpected termination by my employer and thought the circumstances surrounding it were unlawful. We discussed my case and he laid out all options and used no pressure to guide me towards a decision best for me, not him. He wrote up a fantastic demand letter that was very fair, to the point, eloquent, but firm. Mr. Neary breaks any stereotypes of a lawyer being greedy or dishonest. You will find no such things as he has personal convictions to live by Christian principles.

Upon the recommendation of a few acquaintances, I contacted Mr. Neary to get advice with regard to a property suit in Baltimore County that originally went back about ten years. I was pleasantly surprised and gratified when he promptly responded--in spite of many other demands on his time, having already researched the issue--to ask follow-up questions and to get a look at the documentation I had. First, he offered reassurances that it appeared the position I was taking was the appropriate one. Then he proceeded to make contact with the opposing counsel to make them aware of certain circumstances they apparently had not considered in taking up the lawsuit. When I heard from him again, it was to confirm that the plaintiff was pursuing me in error and that I should expect communication from the plaintiff's counsel that the lawsuit against me would be dropped. Because I never heard from the plaintiff's counsel, I appeared in court as assigned. No one from the plaintiff's side was present, and the case was dismissed. Thanks to Mr. Neary's willingness to make a phone call or two based on my initial communication, I was never embroiled in another costly legal battle, and he didn't even charge for the calls. God bless him!

Sandy Steeves is a dependable, knowledgable lawyer. He was a great advocate for my family and very helpful in his advice and clarifications of the law. I appreciate his connection and support of the community as well. He contributes his time to the Catonsville Men's Civic Association as President of the nonprofit and is a personal sponsor to events around town as well, supporting the Catonsville Santa House and music festivals for Music City Maryland. Community is very important to him and Catonsville is fortunate to have the support of businesses like his.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Catonsville, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
