When in need, everyone should be so fortunate as to have an attorney like James McCollum. Mr. McCollum helped me to pursue a work-related grievance. Right from the start it was clear that he was sharing a wealth of experience and knowledge. When I sent over my info, he and his team got right to work on checking the viability of my case. Over about a week or two, Mr. McCollum gave me regular updates on their research into relevant case law, statutes, limitations, and the challenges with each. They reviewed well-known and recent laws, as well as older and more obscure. He broke all of this down in terms I could understand, and explained how each option may or may not succeed. Mr. McCollum was upfront about challenges, possible outcomes, and realistic goals. As such, not everything was what I hoped to learn about my case. But, he helped me to make better, more informed decisions. He looked out for my best interests (where some lawyers would probably prioritize their own) and gave his time generously for my small case. Our conversations always put me at greater ease, and I got a sense of him as an honest and good man. In the end, Mr. McCollum guided me through a hard and drawn-out process. He walked me through possible motivators of the other side, costs and risks they might run into at different stages – things I think you can only learn from experience. His insight allowed me to hold ground with confidence. With his guidance, I was able to secure a workable end, and move on.

Mr. McCollum represented me in a personal injury matter. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable and confident. Dealing with the at-fault driver’s insurance company, was not easy. Although the insurance company had initially refused a settlement offer, Mr. McCollum used his expertise and ability to reach a satisfactory settlement. Mr. McCollum is extremely competent, professional and helpful. I certainly recommend Mr. McCollum for your legal needs.

With nearly half my life spent as a law enforcement officer protecting the rights of everyday people to pursuit thier dreams, raise their sons and daughters, and enjoy the basic rights and freedoms that our constitution declares God given...for all my knowledge, experience and courage all I could do was pray for Gods help when my own son was in the battle of his life.. There was a time in the history of Law when lawyers relied largely upon word of mouth referals. Those referals seldom came for those that did not earn them. More importantly there was a gracefullness and dignity displayed by attorneys that represented thier work ethic. When you were represented by one you felt as if you had just been adopted by a big brother...as opposed to the "fast food drive thru line" feeling you get with many Attorneys nowadays. Attorney Mccollum from beginning to end was tenacious in his pursuit of justice for my Son. His team of seasoned attorneys, investigators, and Law Clerks all take great pride in the overall outcome of your case...Yes.....they actually know your name... In my case...my son has been vindicated and is pursuing his own path in life.My personal trust in our Justice system has been strengthened. More importantly my faith in God has been renewed and my life in him restored..if you want an attorney to represent you than call anybody...if you want an attorney to fight for you...call Atty. Mccollum

I consulted with Mr. Hammond and he was very helpful during a stressful time I was facing concerning a property damage matter. I strongly recommend his services, he was very patient an attentive to my situation. He actually listened to my concerns and didn't just brush me off the phone like a lot of law firms have the tendency of doing. If you're looking for representation I strongly recommend.

Mr. Green represented me in an emotionally charged estate matter last year and offered me unparalleled advice and support for the duration of the case. It was clear that he was well respected by the judge in the courtroom and by attorney representing the other party. Mr. Green is extremely professional, well-spoken, and has a very strong presence in the courtroom. I would recommend him without hesitation.

Unfortunately, due to my former husband's conduct, we had to rely on Mr. Salmond on several occasions to represent my husband due to his drunk driving. We found Mr. Salmond to professional and knowledgeable concerning the DWI charges and associated charges. He knows his way around the courtroom and the MVA. Mr. Salmond does "create" defenses, but rather is honest and above board when it comes to listening to the circumstances, investigating the evidence, and then offering his best legal advice regarding the specific situation. There is no sugar coating and no over-promising. However, I also found him to be understanding of the defendant's personal circumstances with good recommendations on one trying to get their life back on track. I have known Mr. Salmond for over 25 years and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone in need of legal advice and assistance.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of College Park, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
