Meg was recommended to me and handled my contentious protracted divorce. She was extremely responsive and had a special ability to "calm" the emotions and stay focused on the case issues. I felt well supported by her, and she answered all my questions. She hung in there as an advocate no matter how hard it got or how obstructive my ex-husband was. With her help and support I am happily divorced. I appreciated and benefitted from her skills and wisdom. She was definitely in my corner through it all. With her advocating hard for me the case did settle.

After my 24 year marriage came crashing down around me I had no idea where to turn or what to do next. As a man, about the only thing that I knew was that I wanted to hire a female attorney with a lot of experience. A friend of mine recommended that I reach out to Meg Oliver to have her guide me through the divorce process. I am so glad that I did. Meg is a unique blend of experience, great communication skills and patience. In the end Meg Oliver negotiated a fair agreement with me ex-wife's lawyer. I was pleased with the outcome and highly recommend Meg to represent you in your divorce.

Meg provided me with all legal route options related to my case with all possible paths and outcomes including timeframes and financial burdens. She is incredible with communication via emails or phone calls, keeping track and staying on top of all required documentations. Her knowledge and experience in divorce law helped me in a great deal to get a settlement and a court order. She also has a wonderful office staff. I am extremely happy that she was on my side.

I had no clue on how to move forward in getting a divorce after 28 years of marriage.. Meg was amazing, she knew how to talk to me to feel comfortable on moving forward with the process. Always on top of the next step, an very thorough with all the paperwork. Always there for me even on a holiday, all I had to do was email her and or her Admin and they would get right back to me. Meg made this process much easier for me than I thought. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING ! If you are in need - DO NOT LOOK ANY FUTHER. CALL MEG OLIVER. It was fast and less stressful for me. I am Happy to have met her. Thank you Meg

My husband sent me a text wanting a divorce. I was devastated. I knew I needed an attorney ASAP. I contacted Meg Oliver, as she was highly recommended by a friend. After explaining my circumstances, she told me what I needed to do. Meg worked hard, and countless hours. She kept me informed every step of the way. Her personality and work ethic is was what I admired. Meg is soft spoken, but during mediation she stands her ground. If you re looking for a good divorce attorney, I would highly recommend Meg Oliver.

Ms. Leffler was very helpful, competent and responsive during our interaction. Everything I've seen while I was at their office was the way it should be: a professional environment that fostered the trust necessary for our long term engagement. No need to go with a "big" name when you can get quality services from people in your neighborhood. I highly recommend them.

I used Mr. Meyers services to complete a divorce proceeding that another lawyer was too incompetent to handle. Mr. Meyers was familiar with the law surrounding my particular situation and brought the matter to a satisfactory conclusion with little time wasted. A true professional.

I have used Mr. Randall in an adoption matter and in a divorce. He does not waste time filing motions and charging me a ton. He streamlines the case and is honest in how the judge wants things to be worked out between the parties. I highly recommend him

Mr. Gracey is a stand up attorney for what is right. When a "professional" was slandering his client and unethically telling the judge outright lies, he immediately took action to address the situation and made sure the judge was informed.

My husband and I had trouble finding a reputable attorney, we had met 4. Wayne was the first one willing to put us on a payment plan for the retainer. He even traveled to our home when my husband was sick to meet with us. I have since referred him several other clients and they all seem equally as happy. His friendly staff was always available to answer our questions when Wayne was busy in court. We highly recommend him

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Columbia, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
