My experience with the firm, including Carla Clarke and Heidi Myers in particular, was nothing short of excellent. Of course, nobody seeks legal counsel because of happy circumstances - which makes empathy, patience, sound and thorough guidance, and attention to detail all the more helpful, if not critical. Flynn & Clarke showed all of these in spades and were pivotal in supporting me through challenging circumstances and ultimately in securing an equitable, positive outcome where my case was concerned. I never felt pressured toward one avenue or another, and while it was a business relationship that involved (a very fair and reasonable amount of) monetary consideration, that never felt at the forefront; if anything, it was made clear that the goal was to avoid dragging things out to pad fees. I can't recommend the firm highly enough. Thank you, again!

Carla Clarke is a lawyer powerhouse! Her knowledge spans a long list of topics. No matter your legal need, trust that Carla of Flynn & Clarke along with her team will surpass your expectations. I experienced consistent communication, clear direction of what I could do to help my case’s progress, deep empathy for the situation I was experiencing and timely responses to my questions. Carla took time to explain the legal processes of my situation and give me clear, confident opinions concerning what I should do. Although I maintained control in my decision making, she never left me feeling alone in how to make the best choice. Specifically, I had to escape my abusive marriage and flee my beloved family farm with my son. My ex represented themselves and their behavior was contentious to say the very least. They aggressively challenged Carla on every detail and down right disrespected her every chance they got. Carla was completely unfazed and instead became even more methodical in her approach. At every turn, she kept mine and my son’s safety at the center of our desired outcomes, but never once lost sight of appropriately using the legal system to ensure I and my son were no longer taken advantage of or put in danger any longer. Make no hesitation - you have found the best lawyer for your legal needs in Carla Clarke of Flynn & Clarke!

Carla knows the court system and the Law well and has a unique ability to deal with people and rough situations while in negotiations . I consider her a friend and real professional that is top in her field after interviewing 4 other attorneys to hire. I can't thank you enough for your wisdom.

4

“Carla and her team are top-notch quality. I was very happy with the work they did for me and the results. She is also extremely responsive, which is an important thing!”
Cons
1
Potential bias and lack of impartiality in certain cases involving a Best Interest Attorney (BIA)
“Carla Clark is a horrible BIA! Her priority is not the best interest of a child. Her priority is to appease her attorney buddies and or colleges. You will be pleased with her if your attorney and her are friends or have worked together in the past.”
2
Concern about the Best Interest Attorney (BIA) not properly considering the child's needs and instead siding with the attorney they have a relationship with
“She didn't care about my step son's needs or wants. She spent a total of maybe 3 hours with him and made a determination that he was ill equipped to speak for himself at almost 13 years old. She ignored the professional opinions and advice of his doctors and healthcare providers or his school officials.”

Lawyer Carrillo has been our attorney for the past nine years, and he has truly become part of our family. He represented us when we applied for a U visa, and thanks to him, we received it. After three years, we were able to apply for permanent residency, and he was also our attorney during that process. Now, thanks to him and his team, my family and I are green card holders. He did an amazing job and treated us like family rather than clients. I’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking for an attorney.

Responsive, professional, and affordable is how I'd describe our company's experience with Radiance. She kept us well informed during every step of our trademark process. Having worked with hourly attorneys in the past, I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about her flat rate billing, but I was totally impressed by the amount of time she invested in answering our questions down to the smallest detail. As a small business owner, it feels good to have a trusted advisor and strategic partnership [like Radiance] in our corner. We've already begun referring her to our fellow small business owners.

Radiance IP Law is excellent! This is no ordinary firm. Radiance understands the constraints of startups and she is good at quickly finding solutions. She responded quickly to all my questions and went out of her way to make time to walk me through complex issues. My company is better off for having met Radiance. She has my highest recommendation.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Frederick, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
