Cares about clients and wants to get you a positive outcome without bankrupting you. I have learned that you can pretty much divide divorce attorneys into 2 categories: one group that simply wants to churn information back and forth between attorneys as well as between attorney and client in way that simply bills hours and accomplishes little until the 11th hour when it could have been settled in the first or second hour. And then there is a group, like Karen, that truly wants to problem solve, propose solutions, avoid litigation and get an outcome for her client that is both fair and reasonable in cost. Karen is honest, dedicated and she told me what I needed to hear rather than what I wanted to hear. I cannot recommend her highly enough. I was fortunate to have someone recommend her to me and, every time I mentioned her to someone in the legal community in Maryland (4x), the response from each attorney was overwhelmingly positive. If you are looking for someone who will be in your corner, fight for you, shoot straight with you(the good and the bad), look no further than Karen Amos.

David kept me well informed every step of the way. He was able to obtain a favorable judgement for my case which was a very complicated matter, and although I had no idea which way it could go, he was very confident and reassuring throughout the process. He was quick to respond to emails and calls, and patient with all questions plus able to give very informed answers. Thanks again!

My name is Kenneth Bryant, and I recently engaged the services of Avara Law LLC. I had the pleasure of working with Jennifer on a highly sensitive case for my business. Right from our first conversation, the communication was clear and I found myself receiving frequent emails that required my prompt attention. Collaborating with Jennifer, we meticulously pieced together an offer letter for settlement. After a year-long battle, the settlement was finalized, and I am immensely grateful for the relief it has brought me.

I have been working with Jennifer for quite a while, during this period, I find myself very fortunate to be able to find such a wonderful person who has a high level of dedication and attention to detail in a professional context in her professional works. Jennifer is extremely dedicated and sets high standards for her work. Even though my situation is quite complex, she handles it with great patience and a step-by-step approach, solving problems and offering help in a highly professional manner. In working with Jennifer, I've come to realize that she stands out from others. Because most will tell you the best-case scenarios that you want to hear and plan accordingly but might constantly ignore the long-term potential risk factors. However, Jennifer is different; she would bring up the potential risks and the right thing to do that might not have crossed one's mind. Although these discussions can sometimes be unexpected, Jennifer never hesitates to give her professional opinions and perspectives. She prioritizes long-term accountability and assistance to her clients over providing a temporary pleasing outcome that could ignore significant risks and lead to future problems. This approach is not only rare but also highly valuable and admirable. For me, it was also very educational since I have learned a lot from her. I think anyone who manages to become a long-term client of Jennifer’s is truly lucky. The real value of someone assisting us isn’t just only in completing specific tasks or requirements, but also in providing long-term responsibility, care for the clients, and extra insights and solutions that we hadn’t thought of. She offers advice and support that help us prevent potential future risks, which allows us to relax and move forward with confidence and security, freeing us to dedicate our attention to other areas. I feel incredibly lucky to have had the chance to work with Jennifer. I highly recommend her for her exceptional work qualities, invaluable skills, and dedication

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fulton, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
