She writes well, but when it comes to going toe to toe with prosecution she will remain mute while the client gets completely screwed. We are talking about lives on the line and she won't have a rebuttal for the prosecution though there were MANY. She oddly CHOSE to remained silent. Paid her around $15,000 and zero relief. I believe she did it on purpose, it made no sense, she is NOT to be trusted!!

There are no words that can truly describe what Rachel has done for my family. After several no’s from the parole board and several trips to court for modifications, Rachel took on my husband’s case anyway. It wasn’t because she likes a challenge, but because she believed in him. She looked beyond his crime and saw the man he had become. Outside of knowing law, she is tough yet very attentive, professional, and kind. She makes herself available to her clients whenever she can. We’ve called her after office hours and while she’s been on vacation unknowingly and she was always happy to take the call. We had our final visit to court in August. I didn’t realize until then how well she knew my husband and his case. She talked about him as if he were family (well he is now!). She told the judge how much my husband had inspired her son in his college picks. On that day, against all odds, we finally got a “yes!” There’s no way this couldn’t happened without her (and God). Regardless of the outcome of our case, we highly recommend Rachel because she’s more than a lawyer. She’s a human being with a good heart who believes in second chances. The last time we talked I told her I couldn’t thank her enough. She responded “Just live a happy healthy life together and I’m good.” That is the kind of person she is and we love her for it!

Rachel and i first met around 2011. I was incarcerated and writing different attorneys seeking free advice. Rachel was the 1st to respond. Not only did she give me a few ideas she actually sent me a follow up letter asking how things turned out which is rare for any attorney you haven't paid. Other life issues came at me and i lost contact with Rachel. Kinda gave up. 1 day i get called for an attorney visit and who is it, yep it was Rachel lol. The 1st thing she asked me was if i liked her new scarf!! After this, i had no choice but retain Ms. Kamins (please don't tell her i called her that, i have to call her Rachel lol). We filed and went for a sentence modification and were so sure we were going to win we decided to go for tacos after court. Unfortunately we didn't get the results we were seeking. Rachel cried. I don't know if it was due to us losing or her not getting her tacos. We filed again a year or so later and i was actually granted my sentence modification and released from the DOC after serving 20 plus years. Rachel cried again and i asked her why and she told me bc she was finally going to get her tacos which she recently got and paid for lol. I wanted to mention this story because everyone knows how great of an attorney Rachel is. I just wanted to share an example of how great of a person she is. I'm not getting in any more trouble so she has lost a client, however she has gained a life long friend and that truly is an honor for me. Thank you for listening to my story but my words can not truly describe how great and wonderful Ms. Kamins is as a person.

She is a top notch attorney who will give you the facts straight, speak directly to you about the matters at hand, and all while showing compassion for her clients. I engaged with Linda who worked with another attorney in the practice on my case for over three years. There was some stoppage on my part because of personal matters and also because of the pandemic. But I would highly recommend a consult with her if you are serious about pursuing a family law case. Her hourly rates reflect her professional and experience in the field but are more than worth it!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fulton, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
