When searching for an attorney, I could have gone to the normal route, using commercial attorneys, but I took a chance on this practice...... 10 years later, I wouldn't go ANYWHERE else! The level of comfort, especially when you need it most!, has been the reason why if there is anything that happens in life, I GO HERE! Beth has been someone who has been such a driving force as to my decision to keep coming back to this practice. I will forever extend my gratitude, and have always passed the word on when someone is seeking to find a reliable practice! Thank you Beth!

Mr. Pearlstein and Ms. Renehan handled my case very professionally, responsively, and with great knowledge. My case was unique as I needed to transfer custody from another state to Maryland, which required a thorough modification. Having both of them made me feel safe and heard. They were always on top of my needs, meeting deadlines, and, best of all, they were there for me. They had the best interests not just for me as their client, but also for my child. They were very passionate about what they do. Lastly, their extensive experience in Family Law is what makes them a powerhouse in helping me achieve the custody agreement that I have wanted.

There are good, bad, and mediocre people in every occupation, including lawyers/attorneys. If you are lucky, you might find someone who is spectacular. Gerald Gimmel is spectacular. Mr. Gimmel is honest and knowledgeable not only of current laws but also of pending laws that may affect you. He doesn't merely fill in the blanks of standardized forms with whatever you want to include, collect his fee, and fade out of your life. He advises on which documents are appropriate for YOUR specific circumstances, and warns you if you are seeking to include statements in your will that are legally not appropriate. The latter apparently happens too often. After paperwork is signed and fees are collected, Mr. Gimmel continues to be available for quick advice on related matters. He recently guided me around legal quagmires as I assisted a dying relative. Gerald Gimmel provides a level of service I've never seen or heard of for any other estate attorney.

I dreaded having to engage an attorney... Having dealt with several over the course of my professional career which left me ever so slightly,.. unenthusiastic,.... about retaining one for my own divorce. If I was religious I would "thank God" that I chose Mr. Bouquet. His experience AND expertise were starkly apparent from minute one and remained so to the conclusion. There is no way in, ...wait, I said I wasn't religious, ...there was just no way I would have fared so well in this nightmare of a life changing event without him. I was VERY happy with his representation and feel that you simply could not be in better hands than his during a divorce.

After many years of marriage my wife and I separated and decided to divorce. Ed represented me through a difficult divorce. As a business owner the separation of assets was contentious. Ed took a lot of time to understand what was important to me and was able to work out a divorce agreement that was reasonable and agreeable to my former wide. I can't say enough good things about Ed. I would definitely recommend him to friends and colleagues facing a similar situation.

I have known Mr. Bouquet in a professional capacity for over 10 years. As a family law practicioner in the same jurisdiction as Mr. Bouquet I have been involved in several matters with Mr. Bouquet. While advoacting vigorously for his respective clients, he still always maintained a courteous and professional demeanor to me as his counterpart. Accordingly, while we both fought for our respective clients, his representation did not resort to posturing or other form of grandstanding. In one of the cases that we had together, my client suffered from a rather serious addiction. Mr. Bouquet was appropriately sensitive to those issues and that party's needs without impeding representation of his client. Overall, I have found him to be one of the best family law practicioner's in our county.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Gaithersburg, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
