About a year ago, I was involved in a car accident, and sought Randy’s legal aid — a decision I couldn’t be happier with. From beginning to end, he was so helpful, immediately available, and communicative. What I appreciated about him was that unlike my last lawyer who found out I had experience in law and made me do the work I hired him to do, Randy treated me like he would any other client. He handled everything so efficiently, and didn’t bombard me with constant tasks or questions. He kept me in the loop and didn’t ever make me feel overwhelmed. He was able to work out a settlement I felt very happy with. I was glad he was so tech savvy, so I was able to work out the parts on my end straight from my iPhone, with no complications. It made the process so much faster and smoother. He was thoughtful and caring, sometimes checking in to ask how school’s going or shooting a quick update text with a birthday or holiday message! I never felt forgotten, he made sure I felt like a priority at all times. Any time I texted him, he responded within minutes. If I could give him 10 stars I would, but the 5 stars will have to do. If you recently were in a car accident and concussed or in any other state of injury leading you to need help but you’re avoiding it because you don’t need an even bigger headache, do yourself a favor and CALL HIM!!!

Pros
1
Responsive and communicative attorneys who keep clients informed throughout the legal process
“I was very pleased with the firms representing. There were times when I didn't understand the process and responded in a negative manner but the firm did not allow my outburst to stop them from being professional and did not hinder their services for me and my family.”
2
Successful in getting favorable outcomes, such as reduced sentences or charges dismissed
“I was facing very serious charges and he was appointed to represent me. John was patient with me. Explained my options and got me a good deal without me having to compromise my principles.”
3
Provide personalized, empathetic service and treat clients like family
“The service is great they make you feel like family”
Cons
1
Some attorneys are described as rude, unprofessional, and not acting in the best interests of their clients
“Gideon Obi isn't a good guy he doesn't review the cases and he represents people that hurt their children. He is very rude and lacks professionalism.”
2
Concerns about false promises, lack of communication, and not fully advocating for clients
“They continuously insisted that our best bet was to follow the approach they recommended because it was nearly guaranteed to happen. Surely enough, the end result was not even close to what they had assured us.”

I could not be more pleased with the kind compassionate service that I received from Alan and his paralegal Hannah. My divorce case was a bit unique as there were some complications with multiple states. Most importantly the consideration of using my money wisely is greatly appreciated. Final outcome was to my benefit.

Ten years ago, I needed an attorney to handle my separation and divorce. I knew at the time that it was going to be very difficult and tumultuous. I asked around family and friends for recommendations. A neighbor of mine highly recommended Alan Levenstein of Houlan and Berman. She had been through a very complex and contentious divorce and was very happy with the services that Alan had provided. With that, I decided to have Alan represent me. It was a great decision! My situation, like many others, consisted of the opposing party who wanted everything plus more that they could get. Through Alan’s very capable hands, he was able to minimize the financial impact to myself. Alan skillfully negotiated and crafted a settlement agreement that was optimal, safe, fair overall and most important that provided financial protection if my circumstances should change. As time progressed and my circumstances changed, Alan was able to craft and negotiate a modification to the original agreement. Recently, as my circumstances changed again, Alan was able to craft and negotiate a buy-out of my settlement for a very significant amount less than what my full-term payout would have been on the original settlement. I am thrilled! It’s all over and behind me! Alan did a masterful job. Throughout the process, Alan was able to counsel and guide me through numerous interrogatories and deposition. Numerous times, he coached me and calmed me down especially when he sensed my anger or despair. He made me focus on the task at hand and reigned me in when I felt overwhelmed. Alan is very professional, very organized and a very effective communicator. He made sure throughout that we were on the same page. Alan is very straight forward and he efficiently gets to the point of matters. Most importantly, if something was not black and white, he stated as such. Alan is a great guy, personable but tough when needed. I would highly recommend Alan Levenstein of Houlan and Berman to anyone who is seeking legal counsel.

  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Greenbelt, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
