About a year ago, I was involved in a car accident, and sought Randy’s legal aid — a decision I couldn’t be happier with. From beginning to end, he was so helpful, immediately available, and communicative. What I appreciated about him was that unlike my last lawyer who found out I had experience in law and made me do the work I hired him to do, Randy treated me like he would any other client. He handled everything so efficiently, and didn’t bombard me with constant tasks or questions. He kept me in the loop and didn’t ever make me feel overwhelmed. He was able to work out a settlement I felt very happy with. I was glad he was so tech savvy, so I was able to work out the parts on my end straight from my iPhone, with no complications. It made the process so much faster and smoother. He was thoughtful and caring, sometimes checking in to ask how school’s going or shooting a quick update text with a birthday or holiday message! I never felt forgotten, he made sure I felt like a priority at all times. Any time I texted him, he responded within minutes. If I could give him 10 stars I would, but the 5 stars will have to do. If you recently were in a car accident and concussed or in any other state of injury leading you to need help but you’re avoiding it because you don’t need an even bigger headache, do yourself a favor and CALL HIM!!!

4
Responsive and professional, even when faced with client outbursts

5
Successful in winning cases, even in difficult situations

Cons
1
Some lawyers may not review cases thoroughly or may lack professionalism

2
Potential for false promises and lack of advocacy for clients
“They continuously insisted that our best bet was to follow the approach they recommended because it was nearly guaranteed to happen. Surely enough, the end result was not even close to what they had assured us. Because of the false promises they made and their unwillingness to help, we were more shocked and disappointed than ever.”
3
Concerns about discrimination and disrespect towards clients
“I constantly felt that they were rude while answering questions, disrespectful, discriminatory, and inattentive to the case.”

When I found myself facing a possible corrupt situation at work I was not sure what to do. After trying several law firms, Brain Markowitz was mentioned & I called him. He listened to my story, he asked me pertinent questions & he agreed to help. That was the beginning of years of hard work. Brian guided me through the long legal process with intelligence, humor & kindness. He always returned my calls promptly - day or night. He always made sure that I understood every part of the process. He graciously got to know a bit about me personally, noted my sense of humor & then usually ended every call with a laugh which always put me at ease. Brian was optimistic when I was ready to give up. He was patient no matter how many questions I had. He spoke with my wife about the potential troubles ahead & that helped our conversations at home about the project. I would recommend Brian to anyone that needs brilliant legal help. He understands how to successfully communicate about legal details. He thorougly prepared me for deposition & trial. Years after our settlement when we needed legal help again we called Brian for a referral & he helped us with that. My wife & I consider Brian to be our friend. We are happy to follow his career successes. We are eternally grateful to Brian & consider ourselves fortunate to know him. He restored our faith in the goodness of humanity.

My family and I have worked with many attorneys, but Jennifer is by far the most professional, knowledgeable, personable and thorough attorney we have ever encounter. She is the best in her area of expertise. To have her representing us in an extremely exemplary manner was refreshing! We call Jennifer the 'quiet storm.' Jennifer gets the job done all with a smile. She's phenomenal!

Earlier this spring, I utilized Ms. Anukem's office. I was surprised by the outcome, in my favor, regarding the new child support. I would definitely use again. She thinks about her clients from their money perspective.

I had 2 previous lawyers who did not keep me in the loop or let me know what was going on in my case. Most importantly, they did not let me have input on the direction of my case. My Anukem and her firm kept me up to speed on the case and let me know that I was in the drivers seat. We put our heads together and made some good decisions that helped me end up with custody of my two boys. I am so glad I hired her firm.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Greenbelt, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
