Additionally, his extensive experience and expertise in other areas of law are great assets for those seeking to recover not just emotionally but also financially, once one understands and accepts the idea that no financial award, no matter how great, will ever fully make up for one’s grief and losses, including the time spent in an unhappy or high-conflict marital relationship. As someone who incurred such significant losses and financial costs over almost 10 years of a difficult and often adversarial legal separation process involving property settlement and child custody, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of having someone with Alan’s personality, ethics, and skills as your attorney. I wish I met him years ago, as he successfully finalized my divorce and settled my family’s financial and custody needs in just a couple of months from the date I retained him. He surpassed any expectations I had of him (I must add that I had great expectations given his high accolades and reputation). Most importantly, he helped tremendously not only preserve but improve my children’s psychological wellbeing and ability to adjust to life post divorce, a rare, valuable, and most appreciated skill usually available only to top lawyers with significant additional training in child and family psychology. Here are a few things or resources that Alan actually provides for free that I used to help decide whether Alan was the right choice for my particular circumstances: a free chapter of his book “Happily Separating: The Okun/Billian Way to an Amicable Split.” It is a chapter that helps one clarify personal goals and expectations, including how to decide if a lawyer is a good match, a hefty task to achieve in the midst of the emotional roller coaster that a divorce is. The chapter provides an overview of some of the steps and types of information sought during divorce proceedings, which may help decrease some of your anxiety and hopefully also save you thousands of dollars down the road. It helped me. I highly recommend that you purchase and read the whole book even before your initial consultation or meeting with Alan. It costs less than five dollars on Amazon Digital, which is way less than the typical marital psychotherapy session, mediation, or legal consultation hour. The book will help you gain a more nuanced picture of what to expect from working with Alan in and outside of the court and how to (re)define your needs and goals. Please try not to focus exclusively on the word “amicable” since divorces are often fraught with conflict, or if your experience has been nothing but amicable in the past. Instead, replace the word “amicable” with "civil," "adaptable,” or "flexible,” as my experience is that Alan is extremely tactful, effective, and very well equipped to deal with inflexible people and high-conflict situations. He is an outstanding person and attorney. I feel extremely grateful and fortunate to have worked with him, and I highly recommend his services.

Mr. Billian and Katie were fantastic and super responsive from the beginning. Not only were the super responsive and compassionate, they both also were extremely detail oriented and fixed errors from my previous lawsyer.
