Being one of the finest lawyers in Calvert County, Judy made quick work of getting two traffic violations thrown out, and proved invaluable in a landlord/tenant dispute. She is reliable, effective, professional, and possesses an extensive proficiency in law; not only did she win my cases, but she also provided legal advise on numerous occasions that prevented future issues from arising. I would highly recommend Ms. Gillett if you want an attorney who has your best interest at heart, wins your cases, and treats you like family.

Judy is extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, and never backs down from a challenge. She helped me get out of some unfair (and expensive) tickets that would have wrecked my driving record. She asks all of the relevant questions and crafts her defense well. I would recommend her to anyone seeking a good lawyer!

I hired Judy when I got out of the military and relocated back to the local area to be with my son who was in the physical custody of his dad. She took my case and was ready to work for me. She never made any promises she could not keep and never gave me any unrealistic expectations. She fought for me at every hearing and she gave me sound advice on how to proceed outside of my feelings. She never backed down for the opposing party attorney and in the end, she won my case. I got what I was seeking, more time with my son. I would recommend her to anyone searching for an excellent family law attorney.

Mr. Piereck became my attorney rather last minute to a very complicated case. The states attorneys office at the last minute decided to dismiss it, but Mr. Pierick was extremely helpful and informed on all of my options moving forward and as to why the states attorney’s office canceled. If I ever had another case, I would highly consider even with a long distance between us in counties,I would call him again.

Rick represented me in a traffic case. He and his office staff were extremely knowledgeable and responsive, and remained in continual contact up to my court date. Rick told me everything I needed to know in preparation for my hearing, and made an otherwise stressful situation go smoothly. Thanks to him my case resulted in a successful outcome. I highly recommend Rick for any of your legal needs.

Everything Mr. Piereck informed me happened just as he said it would from start to finish. I don't think I would have faired as well of I didn't contact his firm. This just my opinion but of you have a legal issue give him a call.

Mr. Bryan Jones with the LaFayette Law Office, LLC represented me with an erroneous Protection Order that was DENIED. In addition, he assisted me with shielding the records. He was easy to work with, was extremely thorough, very professional and he knowledge of these type of cases let me speechless. Again, I cannot forget about Mrs. Shaunna for all her help and shoulder to cry on.

Jennifer Dill, attorney, was highly recommended to me by another well respected local attorney with which I had experience, but he has no Domestic / Family experience. I found Ms. Dill to be especially effective when communicating with my children as well as myself. She never lost sight of the desires and needs of my children and my long term needs. Ms. Dill was always clear and easy to speak with. She valued my time as well as I valued her time. Discussions concerning intermediate needs and long term goals were never forgotten. Of the attorneys I have had the opportunity meet both professionally and personally, she stands well above others as a concerned, considerate and conscientious supporter of my needs and rights. Ms. Dill's familiarity with Law was impressive and comforting. Ms. Dill is someone I can trust for my legal needs and requests, to the extent, that I have added her name specifically to my instructions in my Last Will & Testament for the protection of my heirs. I would enjoy any opportunity to recommend this fine attorney to anyone, especially someone with children. ( I am a father with two children. My children think very fondly of Ms. Dill and place much trust in her as well as I). Ms. Dill’s assistant is also very easy to communicate with and is also very reliable. (This obviously speaks well of Ms. Dill’s demeanor as well.) My specific experience with Ms. Dill included: Family crisis support, Judgment filing, domestic marital issues, Will & Testament and General Power of Attorney.

Without a doubt the most exceptional attorney I have encountered to date...competent, professional, timely...returned all calls, answered all of my questions with diplomacy...most importantly, followed through with execution and obtained justice for me when no one else could/would...additionally, I am an out-of-state client who hired Ms. Dill after a phone interview - that's how confident I was that she could attend to matters at hand in a fully capable manner I would HIGHLY recommend Ms. Dill to handle any legal matter

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Prince Frederick, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
