Being one of the finest lawyers in Calvert County, Judy made quick work of getting two traffic violations thrown out, and proved invaluable in a landlord/tenant dispute. She is reliable, effective, professional, and possesses an extensive proficiency in law; not only did she win my cases, but she also provided legal advise on numerous occasions that prevented future issues from arising. I would highly recommend Ms. Gillett if you want an attorney who has your best interest at heart, wins your cases, and treats you like family.

Judy is extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, and never backs down from a challenge. She helped me get out of some unfair (and expensive) tickets that would have wrecked my driving record. She asks all of the relevant questions and crafts her defense well. I would recommend her to anyone seeking a good lawyer!

I hired Judy when I got out of the military and relocated back to the local area to be with my son who was in the physical custody of his dad. She took my case and was ready to work for me. She never made any promises she could not keep and never gave me any unrealistic expectations. She fought for me at every hearing and she gave me sound advice on how to proceed outside of my feelings. She never backed down for the opposing party attorney and in the end, she won my case. I got what I was seeking, more time with my son. I would recommend her to anyone searching for an excellent family law attorney.

I would highly recommend Judith Gillett to anyone going through a divorce or separation. She was very knowledgable about family law, provided expert guidance and advice, and was very responsive to me. During my recent separation and divorce, I most valued her straightforward, yet caring approach to my situation. Divorce is a highly emotional process and there were many times when I struggled with looking out for my own best interests. Judith listened, showed empathy, but consistently applied logic and reason. I never felt pressured, rather, she often simply helped me see the short- and long-term implications of the decisions I was making. Having a lawyer so knowledgable about family law, coupled with a caring attitude, helped me through one of the most difficult periods of my life.

Ms. Gillett has hands down been the best lawyer I have ever encountered. Not only did she get to know me on a personal and professional level to help my case , but she went above and beyond all my expectations. She was there for me through out the entire process and made me feel completely at ease. I found it refreshing that everything was stored electronically and that made it so easy to access information. I could text her and she would always respond no matter what the time. It was wonderful having her there for me 24/7.I never had any trouble reaching her . I was deeply impressed with her accurate knowledge of the legal system and she never failed to amaze me. I would reccomend her to everyone.

Mrs. West assisted me in a modification of custody and child support case. She is very knowledgeable with the law, she is patient and kind. She always answered every email promptly and always offered great advice. She was very up front with me in a respectful way and helped keep me grounded throughout this process. She kept me fully informed throughout my case, so as an anxious person, this is what I needed. I always knew what to expect throughout the process. She always listened to my concerns and never made me feel rushed. When I didn't understand something, she was great at explaining it so I did understand. She always made sure that I understood and was comfortable with every decision we made throughout this process. She never made me feel forced into do anything I wasn't comfortable with. Mrs. West is very efficient and detailed in her work. Once we had an agreement, it was typed up and signed immediately. She is an amazing lawyer. I couldn't have asked for a better attorney! I have and will continue to refer her to friends and family in need of a Family Law Attorney.

Ms West has been my attorney since 2012, she has efficiently resolved cases against my very hostile ex and his constant parade of attorneys. She helped me win sole custody of my son in a highly contentious case. Her disposition is always cheery and pleasant but she maintains a professional tone in all her dealings. She always provides solid legal advice and takes the time to explain and level set expectations. I highly recommend Ms West for any divorce/custody cases you might have.

My case was years ago. I got hit by a drunk driver who tried to leave the scene. He gave the police misinformation and it took a few yrs to track him. During this time Mr. Brooks helped me to focus on restoring my health because I had deep tissue injury which later turned into Fibromyalgia. Mr. Brooks is a man of integrity. He would always tell me not to over or underestimate my condition and this laid the foundation for honesty. We settled in my favor less worries because of Mr. Brooks expertise. Thank you Mr. Brooks

Mr. Bryan Jones with the LaFayette Law Office, LLC represented me with an erroneous Protection Order that was DENIED. In addition, he assisted me with shielding the records. He was easy to work with, was extremely thorough, very professional and he knowledge of these type of cases let me speechless. Again, I cannot forget about Mrs. Shaunna for all her help and shoulder to cry on.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Prince Frederick, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
