I had a complex situation arise that required nothing less than a legal warrior. Searching for a good attorney that I could trust with my case caused even more stress than I had already. I knew from personal experience and from that of friends, selecting an attorney based on internet ads often leads to more expense and disappointing results. While all attorneys appear to be stellar in their ads, just not always so much when trying your case in court. Thank God for a family referral to David Ellin and his legal team!!! There was nothing like having the most prepared, knowledgeable and competent attorney by my side in court! He handled my case with a calm, pit-bull tenacity and even humor when appropriate! David, his associates and staff know what they're doing and I can’t recommend this office highly enough!!! David Ellin, you are my hero! Thank you so much again, for your hard work, great advice and excellent results!

David Ellin came in clutch for my small business when a horrible person tried to not pay for work that was done under contract. He got the full amount of money owed to my company! Awesome job from a guy that goes above and beyond.

Joe was so good the first time that I had to hire him again. He is the truth and takes pride in providing the BEST service to his client. He gives it you raw so that there is no grey area about what he feels is best for you. I will FOREVER have him as my attorney. He won my first custody case. I'm so thankful for all he has done and continues to do.

I hired Joseph Lawrence to represent me in my divorce. He was confident without being arrogant, exceptionally knowledgeable and able to fully describe possible outcomes, procedures, etc., and was able to talk me off the ledge when I became worried. My ex-spouse took a while to hire representation and spoke to Joe a couple of times while he was looking for an attorney. To this day, he says that I definitely had the better lawyer. I agree. We had a very amicable divorce thanks to Joe's diplomacy, professionalism and tact. However, should issues have become contentious, I know that Joe would have fiercely protected my interests.

Ms. Kline is far and away the best attorney I've known, having known far too many than I'd prefer to. She has helped me with several matters (trust and estate, negligence and contract/leasing matter) and in each instance she was on her game, extremely well prepared and running circles around the other party and their attorneys. What's more, she was at all times extremely friendly and approachable, responsive and an absolute pleasure to deal with....an advocate in the real sense of the word. If you are fortunate enough to get her to represent you, you will be happy you did. You're a unicorn Amy, thanks for all your help!

Coming out of graduate school, I unfortunately realized a bit too late I was dating a selfish, dishonest, delusional individual (monster, really). Following some drunken abusive scene on his birthday, I was forced to move out all of his things into a house we were supposed to be living in (this was with an injured hand, and my ex had my car keys, which were only returned after my car was towed). After spending the whole day moving him in on my one day off, I was served an ex parte via a protective order due to "reckless endangerment" (throwing half a glass of water on someone who almost caused a car accident and other abusive behavior from him). He made accusations of assault and abuse while I was not even present to do so. Even though I was hysterical and probably incoherent at the time of my call, Marc took my case. While his counsel (House of Ruth, mind you) refused to settle, Marc thankfully let him (and his counsel) have it in court. He did not let him get away with any of his dishonesty, tampered evidence, and other inconsistencies in his testimony. His partner, Michael, helped me with the "criminal case" and the appeal of the dismissed court case (which was withdrawn at the time of the hearing). I can only thank Marc for successfully scaring this psycho off from showing up to the last two hearings, and I am so thankful everything was dismissed--

If you have a problem with aggressive representation look elsewhere. Marc represented me in reference to a company that had a history of never losing an unemployment compensation case. When Marc was finished with the company representative,I almost felt sorry for him. He subscribes to the Vince Lombardi saying that winning isn't everything,it's the only thing. Even with his success,he keeps his fees affordable. He seems to have a passion for protecting the rights of the little guy.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Reisterstown, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
