I had the privilege of working with Raquel Smith from the Law Offices of Barry H. Helfand, and I cannot recommend her highly enough! Her passion, dedication, and commitment to my case went above and beyond my expectations. From the very beginning, Raquel demonstrated exceptional legal expertise. She listened attentively to my concerns, thoroughly analyzed the situation, and crafted a strategic approach. Her attention to detail and tireless efforts ensured the best possible outcome for me. But it wasn’t just her legal prowess that impressed me—it was her genuine care for my well-being. Raquel took the time to explain every step of the process, alleviating my anxiety and providing much-needed reassurance. She was always available to answer my questions, even during challenging times. In court, Raquel’s poise and eloquence were remarkable. She fought tirelessly for my rights, and her persuasive arguments made a significant impact. Thanks to her, I received a favorable resolution that exceeded my expectations. I wholeheartedly recommend Raquel Smith and the Law Offices of Barry H. Helfand. If you’re seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and effective attorney, look no further. Raquel truly goes the extra mile for her clients, and I am forever grateful for her outstanding representation. Thank you, Raquel, for making a difference in my life!

I wish I could give 10 stars. Engaging Barry to help me with my 2 DUI cases was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Barry handled my cases effectively and gracefully. He has helped me to get the lightest sentences possible !!! I actually think the results were better than the lightest sentences possible. Because of COVID, the court had to change my court dates and the process dragged longer than expected, but Barry and his legal assistant Melanie have always made themselves available whenever I need them. First class lawyer with first class legal assistant! I would highly recommend Barry and his law office. He has saved my life. He could save yours too.

I was facing sexual assault charges and had plead guilty to a misdemeanor with another lawyer. With the plea, I was required to register as a sex offender. this was the absolute worst time of my life. My only chance out of this situation would be a successful reconsideration appeal. I needed a lawyer who was top notch and experienced. I choose Barry Helfand and he did not disappoint. Two months later I was scheduled a hearing and Barry was able to get me a PBJ. I am no longer on the registry, I am a free man. Thank you Mr. Helfand

Mr. Helfand has been always been there for me. For many years I had troubles with addiction and it led to court cases. He always stayed by my side and made sure I had the best possible outcome. Hands down the best lawyer around.

Mr. Helfand, you were MY SECURITY BLANKET today (07-06-2020)! YES, YOU SURE WERE! Thanks for believing in me. You are the only lawyer, EVER, (though I’ve seen quite a few) that through all the clamor, sees me for who I truly am - a decent person who a horrible mistake have made. A mistake though a malefaction made (was made for a reason right and a noble cause but has gone wrong for method implemented). Thanks for supporting, encouraging, and uplifting me. Thanks for seeing, as a whole, the person I am and not just my snafu and not just a source for income to you I be. Thanks for not making me into my transgression, atrocious though be. Thanks for seeing beyond my unintentional contravention to my quality within. Thanks for seeing that I am only a human whose mistake like all others cannot be undone but that notwithstanding, I am not my sin. Mr. Helfand, I want you to know that I want for you, FOREVER TO LIVE, at least and up until I have died and then far beyond. For I am thoroughly convinced, not in this life, ANOTHER LIKE YOU, will I ever find – no, not a one!

I have worked with Mr. Berman for over 2 years and through out my case journey I found him very knowledgeable and helpful. The biggest thing was when no one thought my case had a potential to win, it was Mr. Berman who had the confidence that we have a solid case and can win. His vision and trust was truly commendable. He was always there to assist me and was very patient in making me understand what to expect at every step of the case. He prepared me well for all kinds of outcomes the case could have. I would definitely recommend Mr. Berman for everyone.

I cannot recommend Shawn C. Whittaker highly enough. Not only is he a very well-respected litigator by his peers (especially in real estate, condominium, and HOA law; he is admitted in DC, MD, and VA), he is keenly intelligent and has a phenomenal memory. He also gets high marks for being ethical, fair, humane, and generous with his knowledge, experience, and time. He extended help to me and respected my deadline by promptly responding to my emails and phone calls, reviewing a letter I had written to an adversarial attorney, and allowing me to CC him on it BEFORE asking for a dime or retainer agreement, all of which convinced me to retain him over three other lawyers. He's truly one-of-a-kind and a powerful credit to the profession. Other lawyers would do themselves a favor by emulating him in every respect.

Michael Bruckeheim is an amazing attorney and makes you feel like a friend rather than a client. I knew he was an excellent choice from the start as he spent over two hours on the phone with me on a Saturday morning. He was straightforward about all the possible outcomes of the case, which I really appreciate. He also gave me some courses prior to my court date which really helped my case. In the end, I had my charges greatly reduce and Mr. Bruckheim was a calming influence throughout the whole process. I would highly recommend Mr. Bruckheim!

Michael Bruckheim was nothing short of fantastic through out my entire legal process. I was a first time offender so I had no idea what the process was going to be and he always had that in mind as he guided me through all of the obstacles we faced. I always felt comfortable and knew I was in a good position because of the passion and commitment that he showed me during our very first meeting. I would absolutely recommend Michael to anyone who is looking for a lawyer that will answer any and all questions you have and really go to bat for you when the time comes in court! He laid out he best possible scenario for me on day 1 and that's exactly what we got in the end. I could not be more happy with my decision to hire Michael Bruckheim!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Rockville, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
