Debra is truly a gift of a human being! My family member advised me to speak with her regarding my custody case that seemed to just drag for the last few years. Working with Debra is the greatest experience I could've been given and I hope everyone chooses her for their legal desires. Her knowledge, care and communication has awarded me with the blessing of a breeze of a case in and out of the courtroom. She fights her hardest and is clearly very successful in her career. She has made me feel like my family is truly a priority to her and her ability to take the stress out of such an emotional case makes her the greatest attorney you will ever connect with.

Attorney Ackerman was recommended to me by a colleague. I advised him that I was going through a divorce and needed representation. We had a phone consultation and I immediately knew that she was the Attorney that I needed. Attorney Ackerman was very knowledgeable, kind, assertive and pleasure to work with. Attorney Ackerman made me feel like my case was the only case she had for almost a year. Attorney Ackerman assisted me with retaining my most important assets. I highly recommend Attorney Ackerman you will NOT regret it. Regards Kenneth

Debra was a godsend! She handled my situation, and guided me through my legal process, with the utmost care and professionalism. She listened to my every concern and explained all the details which put me at great ease. She fought hard for me and we came out victorious. Her court room skills are superior and her legal knowledge is top notch! She is also a wonderfully nice person who I like to call once in a while just to say hello. I fully and wholeheartedly recommend her if you are in need of “the very best” attorney around!

Debra was my lawyer through a divorce. I highly recommend her! She was a rock during the rough times for me. Debra is down to earth, honest, kept me informed with all the updates, and easily reachable unlike those fancy, boutique law offices. She knows the law and has a good feel for how the judges might think. You will have a strong advocate on your side fighting for you. if you need a lawyer, reach out to Debra.

Debra is THE ONE to hire if you're going through a complicated divorce (or any divorce, really). Long story short, my divorce took 3 years, 3 months and 25 days from start to finish. Debra was with me and for me though it all. My ex-husband went through 4 attorneys by the time it was all said and done. I got the house (I didn't have to sell it or give my ex a dime of the equity), I got the kids, a big monetary award, about 80% of my attorneys fees paid (which means my ex paid my attorney to fight his attorney)... and BEST of ALL .... INDEFINITE alimony (almost unheard of these days). So if you want an experienced, knowledgeable and passionate family law attorney who is well respected in the court system and run circles around her opposition, call her and meet with her, you'll be glad you did.

Melanie an inspiring attorney! She has a passion for law which I don't think I have ever seen. She loves what she does and always has her clients best interest in mind. I wouldn't want any other person on my side. She fights for what is right and just! I loved working with her and watching her kick butt in court!

Mr. Banks was both knowledgeable and responsive to my legal needs. Mr. Banks is by far the best Attorney in the Washington Metropolitian area. He is a Harvard University graduate which in my opinion speaks for it's self! I was proud and tranquil while my case was open due to the diligent works of Mr. Banks.

We were in a situation that we needed to back out a real estate contract signed without the full knowledge of the property, but the deceiving seller threatened to pursue damage far beyond earnest money deposit (EMD) Before talking to Jonathan Bromberg, we consulted with two other lawyers, paid initial consultation fees. Neither offered any constructive opinions but had no problem representing us with additional fees. Without much hope left, we sought help from Jonathan Bromberg. When we met with Jonathan, he was fully prepared and was honest with our situation. With his experience and competence, he was able to find grounds to defend us. Our case finally resolved itself with the seller taking the EMD. Our experiences with Jonathan was absolutely positive. We felt lucky to have met him. I would not hesitate to have Mr. Bromberg representing us in the future if needed.

I would like everyone to know that because of Mr Bromberg's knowledgeable guidance and advice the John Hancock Insurance company approved my mothers Assisted Living insurance for Riderwood retirement community after denying it for one year. Furthermore, John Hancock has now agreed to make it retroactive to one year ago. This is a huge burden off my family.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Rockville, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
