When my husband got arrested and charged with a DUI that was as bad as when my father suddenly dropped dead. I knew something wasn’t right because my husband was just going up the street. I rode around for hours looking to find his vehicle, I called local hospitals and to no avail. When I arrived back at the house shortly before 2 am, I received a call that he was at a precinct and needed a ride because the vehicle had been towed. Mind you, I had a 6 am flight to work I had to cancel. People hear me clearly; you don’t want to be on the wrong side of the law. Drinking and driving is a serious business that can end your life and livelihood as well as somebody else's. If you don’t have at least 10,000 dollars and a lawyer for this rodeo you will go to jail and a conviction will follow you for the rest of your life. I had been saving up money to get a deck and this happened to us, and I had to pay so much money and had to borrow money from my retirement to pay for my husband’s freedom. Mr. Gibbs reached out to us immediately after I filled out an online form looking for a lawyer. As soon as I heard his voice (I said GOD he is going to help us. I just felt it). He was calm and didn’t judge us at all. He treated us with dignity and respect since we felt so ashamed and embarrassed. We only told 3 friends of whom gave us moral support and 2 spiritual friends and my husband’s brother. No other family or friends knew we were carrying this burden. Mr. Gibbs was patient and kind and so knowledgeable and professional. He laid the truth out and always asked if we had any questions and sometimes our minds were so blown we couldn’t comprehend what he was entirely saying and he just reiterated the information and worked at our pace. He always called us back and made us feel like he didn’t have any other cases but ours. He represented my husband and stood in the gap for us and my husband was not convicted. Mr. Gibbs gave up a pep talk and chastised us with the truth going forward. He made it clear that if we need to go have a drink, have a designated driver or catch Uber. He also put us on a payment plan to soften the blow of paying all at once. My husband still must do community service and pay a fine, but mercy and grace was on our side. I don’t know if Mr. Gibbs is a man of faith or not but GOD used him in a mighty way. I hope we will never have to use his service in this capacity, but I hope I will get a chance to meet him in person in a different capacity. Don’t Drink and Drive. Mr. Gibbs said DUIs are an equal opportunity offense, and it happens to everyone regardless of social status. It can happen to judges and janitors, men of faith or atheists. It is not worth it. The last 8 months have been a horror movie. Today we got our lives back because of the work of Mr. Gibbs.

Mr Gibbs is a phenomenal human being and lawyer. Being charged with a DUI is a scary and stressful situation, but Mr. Gibbs calmed me immediately with his easy going nature and his strong desire to listen and understand the facts of my case. He is well known and respected by all sides; the prosecution, defense, and judge. I have no doubt that having his cache and experience in my corner helped my case get dismissed. While I can not guarantee the same results for you, I know he will fight hard for you and get you the best possible outcome. He is also willing to make payment installment arrangements to relieve any of the financial stresses that come with hiring a lawyer and will meet on a very short notice. I will recommend all of my family and friends to him. Thank you so much Mr. Gibbs and if I ever need a lawyer for anything else (hopefully I won’t lol), he will definitely be my go to.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Amir D. Gibbs on my DUI case, and I couldn't be more grateful for his expertise and support. From our very first meeting, Amir demonstrated exceptional communication skills, always keeping me informed and reassured throughout the entire process. His empathy and understanding were evident in every interaction, making a stressful situation much more manageable. Amir’s gentle and personable demeanor was an unexpected but incredibly valuable trait. He made me feel at ease and confident in the best possible outcome for my case, which he ultimately delivered. His professionalism and dedication are unmatched, and I am beyond satisfied with the result he achieved. I was scammed by a coworker who we gave personal loans for a business with a promise to pay them back. He stole thousand of dollars from me and my family. The case was a long process and at times was frustrating for me due to the anxiety of it all but it was all worth it. We just wrapped up the case 2 days ago and we won! Mr. Gibbs was meticulous in his presentation to the judge and showed professionalism and knowledge. Afterwards we shook hands and thanked him for all his hard work. I would highly recommend Mr. Gibbs!

After my DUI, I was fortunate to become acquainted with The Gibbs Law Firm through a website referral and I am so happy that I chose Amir Gibbs to represent me during my court proceedings. He was able to advise me and provide all of the resources that I would need in order to receive the best possible outcome. Knowing that he had years of experience handling these types of cases gave me the confidence to trust that there was no reason for me to feel anxious and he was able to thoroughly explain and prepare me for each phase of my legal defense. I am extremely pleased with the outcome that he achieved for me, and for the friendly and professional working relationship. I will not hesitate to return to The Gibbs Law Firm for my future legal needs.

Mal is great at this -- He listened intently, read over all paperwork and evidence and won my case in a very masterful manner. It was a first time DUI charge, no priors, no accident, with refusal to blow. I was instructed on steps to take prior to my hearing, preparation, and what to expect. Come hearing-time, I was ready to plea, but he took it trial and was found not guilty, and only paid traffic citations. In the future, I will recommend Mal's office to friends and family.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Rockville, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
