I couldn’t be more satisfied and thankful for Ms. Dana Whitten and her service and the result of my case enough. In every respect, Dana handled my case with professionalism and personal care. Ms. Dana Whitten, who proved to be the most amazing legal support I could imagine. Dana immediately represented me in court on my behalf. She communicated thoroughly with me on Facetime, email and phone calls so that I wouldn’t have to travel to Maryland personally, b/c I live in CA. Ms. Whitten is trustworthy, smart, honest, knowledgeable, experienced, and a very positive, productive attorney who consistently gave me excellent advice. She advocated for me in such a way that earned my complete trust. I can trust. Ms. Whitten’s work demonstrated an effective use of time and a work-ethic that clearly proved she was here for me as her client and wouldn’t take advantage of me financially. Ms. Whitten’s work is very impressive. She has tremendous skills as a negotiator and litigator. My appreciation of her for all the time and energy she put into me personally and my case proved she really had my best interest at heart. I came to completely trust her to lead my case and to deal with every aspect including the misconduct of my ex’s attorney. I felt protected by Dana’s wisdom and knowledge. I cannot stop thanking God for her. In addition to her professional expertise in leading my case, she also gave me an affordable price. Her professional credentials and experience could have easily put her out of my budget, but she met me where I was and gave me far above her legal fees. I had to travel to Maryland when the case was being resolved. When I arrived to MD, My “ex-husband” changed the locks to the door of my house there so I couldn’t gain entrance, Without having anyone else to turn to, I texted and phoned Ms. Dana after she got off work around 6:30 pm and she returned my phone and text me right away and personally assisted in helping me resolve the issue. Dana didn’t even bill me for this showing her kindness was part of her personal and professional attributes. Dana is a kind person and has a heart for her clients. I simply cannot thank Dana enough for her kindness and her heart. Being named as one of the top 10 best attorneys in MD only after having eight years experience (in 2018) shows just how good she is. I couldn’t be more satisfied for Ms. Dana Whitten’s service and the result of my case. She’s even given me some advice for succeeding in my career; she treats me like someone treats their best friend. She’s helped me see myself better and to keep my eyes on the big picture. In short, Ms. Whitten was a huge blessing for me and her service is beyond what words can convey. She is the best of the best. She’s an attorney you can truly trust if you ever need one. I highly recommend her services to any who need legal assistance.

From the first phone call I had with Dana, I just knew that Dana was the right attorney for me to get me through my divorce. She did an amazing job through the the 7 months it took to finalize the divorce. Dana was very attentive and gave me excellent strategic and legal advice throughout the process. I couldn't think of a better attorney to help me. I highly recommend Dana to anyone who needs assistance with the divorce process, whether it's to mediate and put together a separation agreement or to take the case to court.

Dana is amazing. She took me on as a client in the middle of a painful and difficult custody situation, one I had been dealing with for nearly a decade. After tenaciously pursuing numerous motions and negotiations, she was able to finalize a new custody agreement that made life easier and happier for both myself and my daughter. Dana is knowledgeable, compassionate, reasonable, and aggressive. She is not only an outstanding attorney, but more importantly a good person, and I highly recommend her to anyone seeking quality resolution to their family case.

False allegations were made against me in a Peace Order. I was served late on a Friday night, the beginning of a long holiday weekend, with a court date scheduled for first thing the following Thursday morning. I was somewhat panicked to make contact with a lawyer asap, and did connect with one by Monday, but he ended up knowing the accuser's family and had to back out due to this conflict of interest. I reached out to Dana on Tuesday afternoon, less than two days before the scheduled court appearance, and with little time to prepare, she took care of me. She quickly and carefully pulled all of the relevant evidence together to understand my relationship with the accuser and build a solid defense case, separating facts from unsubstantiated fluff. Ultimately, Thursday morning, outside the courtroom, Dana was able to negotiate an agreement with the accuser's attorney to withdraw the Peace Order. This settlement saved my sanity -- and my reputation. Dana made it happen, displaying the highest levels of courtesy and professionalism along the way. She’s also simply a very kind person, so welcome when your life is suddenly in upheaval. I would recommend Dana to anyone needing competent and compassionate legal help.

Mal is great at this -- He listened intently, read over all paperwork and evidence and won my case in a very masterful manner. It was a first time DUI charge, no priors, no accident, with refusal to blow. I was instructed on steps to take prior to my hearing, preparation, and what to expect. Come hearing-time, I was ready to plea, but he took it trial and was found not guilty, and only paid traffic citations. In the future, I will recommend Mal's office to friends and family.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Rockville, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
