We have been doing business with Mr. Wilsman for several years now. He has taken care of several issues for us. We have been very pleased with him and his administrative staff in all areas. He's knowledgeable and explained legal terms to us so that we completely understood. We recently had him make some changes to our will. He took care of them quickly and efficiently, and explained a ramification to us that we hadn't considered. We definitely plan to keep doing business with his office.

Wanted to create a trust and he kept giving me reasons why I shouldn't instead of coming up with a solution to meet my goal.

Michael was recommended to us by another person. He did a wonderful job with the preparation of our wills, power of attorneys, and advanced directives. He explained everything and patiently answered our questions. I would definitely recommend him.

Mr. Wilsman has been my attorney for 13 years and I have always received a quick, professional response to any legal matter I have experienced. My husband and I have done our wills, power of attorney and advanced medical directives through Mr. Wilsman. We had a trip come up which was taking us out of the country and Mr. Wilsman was able to expedite our wills and estate plan quickly and efficiently. It is such peace of mind to have completed these documents. He has also provided numerous consultations, has gone to court on a personal injury case with great results and has helped with traffic violations.

Don is a fantastic lawyer, ethical, hardworking, and will provide a great service. I needed a lawyer for an employment issue that not only involved needing resolving but I was filed against eventually as well. Don worked on all issues in the case and kept me calm as this entire saga has been extremely draining, emotional, and difficult, to say the least, especially for my family. Don, calmly handled the case assuring me the entire time that his laser focus and professional filings will be a strong strategy. Don does not play games, he follows the law and guides you along the way. He handled everything with the other lawyer, filings, and more while keeping me in the loop and explaining from his legal side. I interviewed quite a few lawyers as this case was/is very important for my family, and hired Don based on his strategy, demeanor, understanding, and ethical approach. I strongly recommend Don (and I worked closely with Alexus who is equally outstanding), and the rest of his firm. If you are looking for a smart, calm, ethical strategist for your employment needs then give Don a call for a consult. Great guy, and a great team.

Out of all the lawyers that wanted to represent my case, Don stood out for several reasons. For example, he knew my name and case details every time we connected (you'd be surprised at how many lawyers needed me to remind them of my case). He allowed me to give my perspective while providing targeted feedback using the law. He never made me feel that my feelings, thoughts, or perspective didn't matter. I am honored and thrilled to refer Don to anyone looking for a lawyer, an active listener, an advocate, and an educator throughout the entire process. Thanks for your hard work and commitment to excellence!

Paula took on our contentious custody case in 2019. Despite many setbacks from COVID, she helped us get custody of our child in 2021. Her knowledge of the Maryland court system and family law set up our case in the most successful way possible through multiple pretrials and contempt hearings; we didn't have to go to a full trial. We believe her approach to our case and was the reason the defendant asked to settle. She has been an attorney in Anne Arundel County for over 30 years and her knowledge, network, and skills reflect this tenure. She is a bulldog in court and made sure the defendant's counsel followed litigation procedures absolutely perfectly or not at all; and the judges agreed. She understands the behaviors of disordered parents and knows how to approach them with legal actions that will perfectly document their performances in a manner that the courts will understand. The legal motions she drafted for our case were brilliantly written and documented the events of our case in a manner that truly showcased the poor actions of the other parent. Not only is she good at her job, she also truly cares for her clients and their families and still asks for updates on our kids. She is worth every penny you pay, and we cannot recommend her enough. If you are seeking aid from the courts for any issues, big or small, you want Paula representing you.

In early 2022, I realized that my marriage was over and it was time to get a divorce. I was unemployed at that time and I was concerned about the high cost of a divorce. I then googled- how to divorce at reduced prices. I had also read about fetching the relevant forms from the court and doing one’s own divorce. For me, that wasn’t an option as I needed help in understanding and then completing the forms. I was also saddled with the emotional aspects of such a huge decision to end a marriage and I did not feel confident in completing the paperwork correctly. In my online search I came across: Maryland Divorce Guide - How to do your own Divorce in Maryland, by Richard S Granat, Esq. There was an offer of free legal advice online. The law practice was based on an uncontested divorce. My children were adults and my now ex-husband, who was always one for saving money, was agreeable to an uncontested divorce. My divorce was finalized on 7/17/2023. My experience in using the services of Mr Granat and his associates, Kathleen and Lynette have been simply amazing. I was slow at understanding many aspects of the divorce process, often requiring emails with detailed explanations. The responses were always respectful, courteous and extreme patience. I often made mistakes in completing the necessary forms. Yet there was never any hint of annoyance, just extreme patience and understanding. I can’t say enough about that. Even after the divorce was finalized, and I had to draw up my new Will and Living Will, Mr Granat and associates went over and above their responsibilities to ensure that the documents were completed successfully. The fee that one pays is very affordable. There is no hourly fee. There’s also a fee to purchase documents, for example, different aspects of the divorce process, like a Will or QDRO. I’m so grateful that I live in Maryland and I was able to get the tremendous support I needed, during a very, very difficult time in my life. Thanks so very much to Richard, Kathleen, and Lynnette for your patience, kindness and care. I highly recommend the services of Richard Granat and Associates.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Severna Park, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
