I had a Will, Power of Attorney, and Healthcare Directive drawn up by Mr. Granat and his staff using his website. They were all helpful, responsive, professional, and provided the documents in a timely fashion. They provided a service that was very cost effective to me.

I am very pleased with the services provided by Mr. Granat and his staff. I became acquainted with his book, Divorce in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia back in 1996 and purchased the book. Thereafter I purchased his then available product to produce a Marital Separation Agreement. Recently purchased a Quitclaim Deed and most recently the necessary Divorce documents to finalize my Separation and divorce. He and his staff have been fantastic, and have always answered my questions and met the needs of my personal situation. I have recommended his services to another friend who was unable to use Mr. Granat’s services, because, unlike my spouse who was willing to work out the Separation and divorce, my friend’s wife would not settle anything out of court. I was fortunate. If your situation fits mine, using his services can save you a lot of work, money, anxiety and frustration.

Don is a fantastic lawyer, ethical, hardworking, and will provide a great service. I needed a lawyer for an employment issue that not only involved needing resolving but I was filed against eventually as well. Don worked on all issues in the case and kept me calm as this entire saga has been extremely draining, emotional, and difficult, to say the least, especially for my family. Don, calmly handled the case assuring me the entire time that his laser focus and professional filings will be a strong strategy. Don does not play games, he follows the law and guides you along the way. He handled everything with the other lawyer, filings, and more while keeping me in the loop and explaining from his legal side. I interviewed quite a few lawyers as this case was/is very important for my family, and hired Don based on his strategy, demeanor, understanding, and ethical approach. I strongly recommend Don (and I worked closely with Alexus who is equally outstanding), and the rest of his firm. If you are looking for a smart, calm, ethical strategist for your employment needs then give Don a call for a consult. Great guy, and a great team.

Out of all the lawyers that wanted to represent my case, Don stood out for several reasons. For example, he knew my name and case details every time we connected (you'd be surprised at how many lawyers needed me to remind them of my case). He allowed me to give my perspective while providing targeted feedback using the law. He never made me feel that my feelings, thoughts, or perspective didn't matter. I am honored and thrilled to refer Don to anyone looking for a lawyer, an active listener, an advocate, and an educator throughout the entire process. Thanks for your hard work and commitment to excellence!

In early 2022, I realized that my marriage was over and it was time to get a divorce. I was unemployed at that time and I was concerned about the high cost of a divorce. I then googled- how to divorce at reduced prices. I had also read about fetching the relevant forms from the court and doing one’s own divorce. For me, that wasn’t an option as I needed help in understanding and then completing the forms. I was also saddled with the emotional aspects of such a huge decision to end a marriage and I did not feel confident in completing the paperwork correctly. In my online search I came across: Maryland Divorce Guide - How to do your own Divorce in Maryland, by Richard S Granat, Esq. There was an offer of free legal advice online. The law practice was based on an uncontested divorce. My children were adults and my now ex-husband, who was always one for saving money, was agreeable to an uncontested divorce. My divorce was finalized on 7/17/2023. My experience in using the services of Mr Granat and his associates, Kathleen and Lynette have been simply amazing. I was slow at understanding many aspects of the divorce process, often requiring emails with detailed explanations. The responses were always respectful, courteous and extreme patience. I often made mistakes in completing the necessary forms. Yet there was never any hint of annoyance, just extreme patience and understanding. I can’t say enough about that. Even after the divorce was finalized, and I had to draw up my new Will and Living Will, Mr Granat and associates went over and above their responsibilities to ensure that the documents were completed successfully. The fee that one pays is very affordable. There is no hourly fee. There’s also a fee to purchase documents, for example, different aspects of the divorce process, like a Will or QDRO. I’m so grateful that I live in Maryland and I was able to get the tremendous support I needed, during a very, very difficult time in my life. Thanks so very much to Richard, Kathleen, and Lynnette for your patience, kindness and care. I highly recommend the services of Richard Granat and Associates.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Severna Park, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
