I was involved in a car accident in June 2024. The lawyer, office director, and all other staff took care of my case with all sincerity. It was a place where English, Korean, and Spanish were perfect. In conclusion, I reached a very satisfactory agreement and result. The physical and mental shock and wounds were wrapped up very well. The settlement was of course amazing. 100 out of 100, 5 out of 5, actually more than that! I am truly grateful. Thank you very much! Super recommended!

Attorney Kim and his paralegal staff exceeded my expectations! I was rear-ended in March 2024 on the way to work and was in so much pain because of a sprained back! I was referred to Attorney Kim and he took care of everything, including referring me to an amazing chiropractor! By August I was able to feel like myself again physically, and was generously compensated for my pain and suffering! Thank you for your 10/10 service Attorney Kim! I will definitely be recommending your office to anyone who needs help!

This firm is creative, responsive, empathetic, tough on opposition, thorough, detailed, super clever, and compassionate. They fight hard for their clients. Highly recommend for anyone with an employment law/discrimination issue! Omar and Suvita, the senior partners, stuck with me during the entire process. They communicated regularly which meant a great deal — I have seen lawyers that go long stretches where the client hears nothing. Even though Omar and Suvita had much bigger cases to tackle. Nevertheless, they made me feel like I was their most important priority. Omar and Suvita gave me their full commitment throughout the process. I never had a moment of disappointment or frustration with them as my lawyers . Omar and Suvita are both trustworthy and honorable. We entered a reasonable settlement; I did not want to head into discovery. Last thought: even the firm’s paralegals are impressively skilled and kind! Thank you so much Melehy & Associates.

I was looking for information on how to change my name, but not because of marriage. She set my expectations of how long the process would take and sent me the information I would need in order to accomplish my task. I was 30 minutes late for our call and she was nice enough to take my call with no resentment. She was bubbly and informative.

Kate represented me during an initially complex and contentious modification to child support. She was able to obtain a settlement that greatly reduced my child support payment and minimized extra court and legal fees.

Jeff was very great in helping me when I really needed a legal advice, he spoke with me as though he has known me for years, which makes me feel he was God's send just to put me on the right track I needed to be on, Ever since I spoke with Jeff, My hope has been updated, I feel I have someone I can talk with, God connected me with Jeff on Google, I was so heartbreaking, I log on to Google and too many names shows up but something in me said Jeff ,right there I called him and trust me that's was one of the best decision I have made. I told him I will not regret having him as my Immigration attorney in the future. Thanks Jeff and keep up the great job.

I've gone through 3 different lawyers before I was lucky enough to reach out to Jeff. Jeff helped my LLC negotiate through some tricky contract agreements with another tech firm, and was just an absolute pleasure to work with the whole time. On top of this, he went above and beyond by giving in-depth strategic legal advice on navigating my company in the future as well. Going forward, I'll absolutely be retaining him for any further legal needs. Easily the best lawyer I've ever worked with.

Jeff is an excellent business lawyer. He helped us, when I was Vice President with Total Site Solutions, with our employee contracts, non-compete and non-disclosure agreements, vendor and consultant contracts, and related lease negotiations and drafting. He was efficient, always understanding exactly what we wanted. I would recommend him to anyone who is seeking an experienced corporate attorney.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Silver Spring, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
