Making the decision to file for disability benefits shouldn’t be made lightly. My opinion is that unless your condition is terminal, the administrator is going to drag out the process, as was in my case, for years. After receiving my initial denial letter from the Maryland State Pension and Retirement System one week after submitting my application, I knew that if I was going to succeed, I needed excellent legal representation, so I asked my primary care doctor if he knew of any good firms. Andalman & Flynn, P.C. was his recommendation; my attorney was Mr. Peter Casciano. Should you decide to take this route, along the way, remind yourself that the longer it takes, the larger will be that first lump sum payment. When it seemed like I couldn’t wait any longer, I would call Peter to talk about my case. He is artful in adding his personal touch – a little bit of hand holding, which really helped. Once you both agree on a strategy, aside from keeping up with your doctors’ appointments and a visit to an expert witness, who will give you a battery of tests, all you need do is sit back and watch Andalman & Flynn perform its magic.
