I'm very thorough when it comes to researching and finding the best of the best legal representation. I was charged with assault and domestic violence by my spouse and sadly both charges were bogus from the start. After my initial consultation with Attorney O'Connor he went right to work on my case. I hired Attorney Edward J. O'Connor, Jr and he provided thorough and comprehensive legal wisdom, expertise and execution of not one, but two cases and brought them to resolution. Both charges were dropped and were it not for Attorney O'Connor's excellent legal mind and tenacity, I would have been put in prison. I highly recommend Attorney O'Connor because he is a well respected and a second to none lawyer, he's simply the best. Were it not for Attorney O'Connor I would have lost my two young children and for this I'm thankful to God for directing me to this exceptional lawyer. If you need a lawyer that happens to be the best in the legal arena, Attorney Edward J. O'Connor and his staff should be your first and only choice for legal representation. Thank you Attorney O'Connor.

I am very thankful that I hired Attorney O’Connor. I was devastated about getting a false Protective Order charge against me and I thought for sure that because I was a male, I would not get treated fairly in court. I was represented great and the Protective Order was denied. Attorney O’Connor and his Staff are the best. From my first call to the end of my hearing, Attorney O’Connor and his Staff was available and when Attorney O’Connor wasn’t available, he responded to my calls and emails in a timely manner to advise me on all of my issues. Attorney O’Connor is very professional and I would recommend him for anyone. Thanks for your professionalism and help.

I hired Ed O'conner for 2 different protection order cases (at $1500 a pop). The first one was dismissed by the judge as it was clearly ridiculous and the judge had some common sense. The second one, however, became one of the worst things that happened to me party due to the incompetence of this lawyer. Less than 3 weeks after the first, the second was filed for unrelated accusations. CPS unsubstantiated the claim. In our discussions leading up to court it was very clear that we would take it to trial. I provided Mr. O'conner with any information he requested. At the hearing, he decided that we needed to make a 'deal' and not go to trial. I argued with him and he shamed me, saying I was a pain to deal with. How could I be confident to go to trial with a lawyer that clearly did not want to? I was between a rock and a hard place. I ended up with supervised visitation of my child, when before I had half custody. I was defeated by my own lawyer. Later, when problems arose due to the agreement not being written specific enough, he argued that I was wrong about what the deal was. I asked if he checked his notes and he answered 'no'. I reminded him that last time I spoke to him he didn't even remember who I was so how can he be so sure of his memory of such a specific detail? He responded that I wasn't making any friends like this. I told him how unprofessional and unreliable that I felt he was and am now conveying this information to save anyone else from this type of situation. Luckily, I later found a great lawyer who was able to undo all of the foolishness of this situation and restore half custody and my relationship with my child. My current lawyer and the judge both stated how it was a terrible decision to make that deal when CPS unsubstantiated the charges and I was given bad legal advice. Be warned.

A friend referred me to Mrs. Duncan has she was the attorney that represented her in the probate proceedings in her mother's estate. After consultation I hired Mrs. Duncan in May 2023 to represent me as the executor of my mother's will in her estate Mrs. Duncan proceeded to put forth the probate process through the court and kept me informed on anything that was needed in my behalf, as well as keeping the other heirs informed. Considering there were other heirs and variables in the Will she was able to communicate clearly what the next step were. Most importantly she was available as your attorney to answer questions, return calls and emails in a timely manner which was appreciated, so yes, I would recommend Mrs. Essita Duncan as a probate attorney

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Upper Marlboro, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
