Explained my situation to her. She basically told me there was nothing I can do which is complete bs because I have already filed and began the process. I’m just looking for representation at this point. She’s unaware for lack of a better word. WILL NOT RECOMMEND!

For as much help as Ms Hotchkiss brought to my case, I would've been better served if she hadn't shown up to court. She was unprepared and did not present evidence she told me she was going to use. She didn't stay on track with her questioning and seemed flustered. The judge barely paid attention to her when she made objections. She was unconcerned that I lost my case and I feel like I just threw away a lot of money. I would never recommend her.

When served with custody papers, I had no idea how to proceed or what to do next. Phyllis was a perfect choice for me. She not only knows what she is doing, but had truly had my best interest at heart throughout my case. She kept me not only informed but in check when I needed it. In the end, I got more then I ever imagined I would. I cannot speak highly enough of Phyllis!

I chose Phyllis Hotchkiss as my representation due to finding positive reviews about her online. Now that I have experienced what type of service she offers, I thought it would only be due diligence for me to write a review. I thought that Phyllis' services offered were appalling. I did not feel at any time that she had my best interest in consideration, only what was easy for her. If I asked her a question, her response was in such a tone that it made me feel foolish for asking her, even though I thought that is one of the reasons you have an attorney - for legal counseling. She did not honor deadlines that I expressed to her in ample time that were of concern for me, she did not push for my best interest in any way, shape or form. She took a very laid back, non-aggressive approach and allowed for my husband's attorney to take control of the proceedings, even though when I originally approached Phyllis several months prior, the cards were stacked in my favor, per se. After informing her that I intended to see new counsel, she created an invoice that used up my entire retainer and then charged me even more money! I am highly dissatisfied with her disassociation with my case. I guess it wasn't exciting enough for her, I just wish she had told me that from the start instead of putting me at a disadvantage with my case and wasting all of my hard earned money as a single mom.

Sheryl stayed with me from start to finish on my case, keeping me updated by text and being responsive throughout the process. She gave good guidance and working together with the other partners in her firm, we achieved the best outcome for my case. On top of that her fees were very reasonable.

Ms.Dublin and the firm she represents have proven to be great ally's through and through. Time and time again Ms.Dublin has astonished me with the level of effort and dedication shes put into each and every single one of my court hearings. She has diligently worked and managed the many aspects of my case. Maintaining clear communication with the states attorney and myself. Her attention to detail is the only reason I was able rejoin my family's company. All and all her most astounding trait is her compassion. I'm so very appreciative of Ms.Dublin and the care and concern she invested in me and my family.

Ms. Dublin took a case for my son at the beginning of 2019. This was a long and difficult case which went through mental health court. What I appreciate so much about Ms. Dublin is her commitment to see things through to the end in what turned out to be a very favorable outcome for my son. Both my son and I couldn’t be more pleased.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Waldorf, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
