My family hired Attorney Low for a consultation to discuss estate planning options for our elderly father. It was not a good experience. We paid $450 for a 90-minute consultation. Attorney Low was 25 minutes late for the appointment, and ended the session after 65 minutes. There was a specific, crucial legal point that she said she would look into as a follow-up to the session. After two weeks of silence, I emailed asking whether she had looked into the issue yet, and noted that this was time-sensitive for our family. I got no response. After another two weeks, I emailed again, asking if she had looked into it. Again, I noted that this was an extremely time-sensitive issue for our elderly father. Again, I got no response. It appeared during the booking process and in the actual consultation that the office --which is a small practice-- was extremely understaffed, and undergoing some turnover. That happens. But the bigger issue is that Attorney Low was disrespectful -- disrespectful of our time by starting late, disrespectful of our finances by ending the consultation two-thirds into the time for which we paid hundreds of dollars, and disrespectful of our needs by failing to follow through at all -- and ignoring multiple attempts to follow up. It was unprofessional.

We had no prior knowledge of Julie so we took a chance and retained her to look after our estate planning - based purely on her impressive web site. We are very happy with the attention and service we received. She was patient with us and explained each phase of the process. She even went above and beyond to settle some problems we were having with our banks. Thank you Julie.

Ms. Low was recommended by our Financial Advisor. We needed to get affairs in order, my Husband was diagnoised with Parkinson. Ms. Low was very professional. Easy to contact. Returned phone calls in a timely fashion. She came to our home and explained all the legal moves to our Children. They were very pleased that she had taken the time to care so much for our family. Before we knew it, our cares and legal concerns had been handled quickly. She is a smart, and a lovely lady. I felt that I had known her for years, she makes you feel very comfortable in her office, she is a delight and knows her business. We are glad to have her as our Attorney.

David was very professional during the whole divorce case. He appeared to run laps around his opposing counsel during my divorce. His knowledge and legal talent is the best I have ever seen or dealt with. He skillfully negotiated the best possible outcome for me in my divorce. He kept me informed at all times, and he was always available for questions, even finding the best way out of several difficult legal quagmires. He put a complex case settlement together in a timely manner. I find he was reasonable with his fees, he kept my costs minimal, and he was more than fair with me overall. My divorce settlement was approved by the Court without problems. This allowed me to get on with my life in freedom. David's relatable style, and candor was refreshing. This was just what I needed during that tough time in my life. As a result, I ç highly recommend David and his firm. In fact, I would not have recovered as well as I did without his steady guidance throughout my divorce proceedings.

This is my second time working with David Gabriel. If I have to get an attorney I will choose him again. If you need someone who is honest and knows his stuff - hire him. My case was complicated- other attorney was interested in her own earnings and tried to drag things along just to bill. David was making things mentally as easy as possible for me and shield me from other side nonsense and abuse and absorbed a lot of craziness. He will do a great job and he is honest man. He is doing things Right.

As an attorney myself, I know how difficult it can be to work with high-maintenance clients, but David has the patience of a saint and answered all of my calls, texts, and questions along the way. His communication was exceptional, far surpassing my expectations. When it came down to the terms of divorce, custody issues and child support, David’s experience in this field was invaluable. During my divorce, the darkest times of my life, Attorney Gabriel provided constant support and counsel, guiding me through this very difficult time. David and his terrific, dedicated staff consistently went above and beyond, seemingly treating me as if I was their only client. Assuring me with explanations and terms I could understand, Attorney Gabriel was able to walk me through complex legal language that was completely foreign to me, making all the difference. If you find yourself headed into divorce, I strongly recommend that you consider Attorney Gabriel. -C.K. - Amesbury, MA.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Beverly, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
