When my parents first hired Attorney Tricia Shumaker to prepare their estate plan, they had no idea they were running out of time and on the precipice of needing far more than estate planning. Within a few weeks of working with Tricia, unexpectantly, my father became gravely ill. Fortunately, they picked the right attorney! Tricia came to the house for the convenience of my 90+ year old parents. She patiently and compassionately listened to my parents’ wishes, asking questions, attending to all the details, and making sure that she fully understood my parents’ goals and that they understood her role. She explained to my parents all the financial issues they were faced with and provided prudent guidance through these complicated decisions. Tricia and her team went into immediate action, creating all legal documents, including wills, power of attorneys, health care proxies, trust and all the legal work behind these documents, all completed in record time. Goal accomplished! Tricia’s command of Elder Law, Estate Planning and the Massachusetts legal and Medicaid health systems is second to none. Then, when my mother could no longer remain at home alone, Tricia worked her magic again, successfully navigating the Massachusetts legal and medical systems with huge success. Throughout the entire complex process, Tricia explained each detail/nuance, of which there were many, making sure I fully understood each step. This was a difficult time for us, yet she was stalwart, persistent, professional, and successful in settling our mother in an appropriate nursing facility. Another goal accomplished! Tricia is very precise, professional, thoughtful, compassionate, and thorough. She is a brilliant elder law and estate planning attorney. I have 1000% trust and confidence in Tricia and 1000% recommend her services.

I would first like to express my gratitude to Tricia and her team who worked very hard in on an extremely time sensitive deadline to get my family's situation sorted out. Tricia created a comprehensive package of wills and trusts for my parents in an incredibly professional manner. Her attention to detail and response time were fantastic and I highly recommend her services.

After attending seminars for quite awhile, I decided, over 4 years ago, to shop for an Estate Planning and Elder Law Attorney. A friend recommended Attorney Shumaker. When I called her, she offered me a free consultation. The moment I met her, I was struck by her knowledge and also her kindness and patience. I knew she was the attorney that I should chose to help me navigate the world of estate planning and guide me through many difficult decisions. It has been a pleasure to work with Attorney Shumaker over these last 4 years. She is a gifted attorney. Her knowledge of the complex field of Elder Law and Estate Planning is impressive. But she is always able to break down the complexity in an easy understandable way. In addition, she is quick to respond to any question I have, she gives me confidence and peace of mind. She is always calm. I am very thankful I have Patricia Shumaker as my attorney and I envision our relationship to continue through the many years ahead.

After a previous attempt by another legal firm to create our estate plan, with very little satisfaction and completion, we heard about Mrs. Shumaker and her firm. We decided to proceed with her to formulate a current and complete estate plan. In addition to just the estate plan she went above and beyond to organize our finances accordingly with just the results we were hoping for. Her ability to explain all of our issues in understanding terms was invaluable to us. Our experience with Mrs. Shumaker has been absolutely fantastic and we would highly recommend her to anyone seeking estate planning.

My husband and I met with Tricia to create an estate plan. She explained everything to us with great detail and in terms we could understand. It was a lot to absorb for us but she guided us through every detail and we were given clear instructions on what we needed to do to get everything in order. We were then given copies of all our documents with instructions to read through them. We meet in 1 year to review our plan and follow up with any changes needed. She was wonderful to work with and made us feel very at ease throughout the process.

Greg is a great attorney all around. He listens to your concerns, your opinion on the case, does the necessary research needed for any question. No matter how difficult the situation is, Greg is there to help. Whether it is a case that is a day long or one that is 3 1/2 years long, he always has the same positive attitude and work ethic. I would recommend him to everyone if possible. I’ve worked with him on both consults and on a case and am quite happy with all results.

first of all this was a crazy case that lasted 3 years with the twists and turns that a Hollywood movie couldn't write. Greg stuck with it the whole way, thinking through strategy, checking facts, law, consulting with other lawyers to make sure the strategy was sound. always on time, easy to get ahold of, and easy to work with. most of all takes what he does very seriously, and is great in court. i would absolutely hire him again if i ever have the need.

I initially went to Richard Grossack - or Rocky for short - through the suggestion of a family friend and my entire experience with him was above and beyond what I could have expected. Not only did he explain all of my options clearly and concisely, but he also communicated with me throughout the entire process and followed up with me afterwards. I highly recommend his services to anyone in need. Thanks again for everything Rocky!

Attorney Grossack was an absolute professional and was able to settle my case with almost no hassle at all. He was very confident and exhibited poise and expertise at all times. Attorney Grossack, as difficult as I may have been, never hesitated in returning my phone calls or emails or answering the many questions I had for him. I would highly recommend his services to anyone needing a personal injury attorney in Boston. Thanks Rocky.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Boston, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
