Attorney Feeney represented me on a child support order. She was very polished and skilled. Attorney Feeney is so brilliant and clever and quick-witted she danced circles around the opposing Attorney but it was done in such a professional and classy way. I was amazed by her brilliant work. She is in a class all by herself for the work she does. She is a top grade Attorney who will fight for you until the end. Thank you!

After doing a lot of investigation on who I should hiring for an attorney to representation for my divorce which was going to be very difficult due to some military issue and child custody issues Attorney Feeney stood the front lines for me and my child and looked out for what was best for us. She fought hard for us and never backed down. At times I lost hope but she showed the judge what was best for the child and everything turn out great. I trust her and her knowledge of the laws and the court systems. I couldn't say enough on how great she was on protecting my child. Due to abuse I have to keep my name out of this to protect me and my child.

Kate was the best. She fought for everything i was asking. Without Kate, I would not have what i have today. A little woman but stands 6 feet tall in court. Kate got me my house, cash settlement, and most of all, my kids. Kate you're the best....Thank you so much...James

Attorney Katelyn Burke Mills was invaluable in my process of applying for social Security disability. I would not have been able to navigate the paperwork and appeals process without her patient coaching and persistence in following up needed steps. She took care of many details such as obtaining medical records and filing the appeal forms. I would certainly have given up if it had not been for her encouragement through each step. Katelyn suggested obtaining a cognitive evaluation through my insurance or paying privately. It was not something I would have sought on my own as it is a difficult evaluation. However, that evaluation certainly helped my case. She made sure I was prepared for court so I could participate calmly. I was successfully approved for disability within a surprisingly short overall time frame. Communication with Attorney Burke Mills was always prompt by phone or email. She checked on my case through court records and updated me with progress and next steps. I would most definitely recommend Attorney Burke Mills to anyone applying for disability.

Katelyn goes above and beyond any Attorney/Client relationship, she has exceeded my expectations with her due diligence and details into specific matters. Her attention to details and data gathering hugely made a difference in my case, which was denied previously two times. With her help and directions, she was a true professional in front of the Judge Law. From the proceedings which I was a nervous wreck, she calmly walked me trough the process. From the time I contacted Katelyn I knew I was in better hands than the previous years on trying this process alone. I would Highly recommend Katelyn for any legal proceedings..... Steve P.

I hired Katelyn to handle my Social security disability claim. From our first meeting until the end of the procedure I felt comfortable that I had the correct person on my team. At all times thru the process there was never a phone call not answered or returned in a timely fashion. I was constantly kept up to date on my claim. Yes, I would feel comfortable referring Katelyn.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Burlington, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
