I live with my children in India, and my Ex-husband filed for divorce in the US in 2020. I was searching for legal assistance in the USA for my divorce and family law case. I had the wonderful fortune to find a very remarkable lawyer who went above and beyond to assist me. Despite being far away, Ms. Erica Foster gave my case her undivided attention, exhibiting unparalleled skill and compassion throughout. The extent of Ms. Erica's knowledge of family law and divorce proceedings was astounding. She carefully looked into every facet of my case to ensure that justice was done. Ms. Erica Foster's remarkable presenting abilities were what really made her stand out. She confidently articulated to the court the intricacies of my case, leaving no doubt in their minds. Her ability to clearly state important aspects and foresee objections ensured that my case was as strong as feasible. Despite residing in two separate countries and time zones, Ms. Erica Foster was available and attentive throughout the process, answering any questions or concerns I had immediately. Whether you are a US citizen or not, I heartily suggest her services to anybody needing a committed and skilled family and divorce attorney.

Attorney Foster is a highly competent and experienced attorney that "gets it" from the client's perspective. She's direct and results driven, not interested in wasting your time and money. (The antithesis of lawyers who run out the clock speaking to issues of high emotion but little impart.) In my divorce we faced a lot of nonsense from the other side and having an attorney that won't entertain that and brings none of their own helped me keep costs down and ultimately hold the line right where it should be.

I have been fortunate to have Erica "on my side" on two occasions. She is extremely responsive, has precise communication and does not attempt to "ad-lib" as many attorneys do. Not once did Erica loose sight of my goals as a single parent and she fought bravely for my twins and myself. She completely understood both the legal and emotional side of my high conflict divorce and I can report with confidence you will be happy with her abilities!

From my first initial call to The Law Offices of Erica M. Foster, then my consultation before our first appearance in court, it was nothing short of a complete and utterly professional experience. Right from the start Attorney Foster showed great confidence when I was in a place where I felt unsure about everything. I had a situation that was of a time sensitive matter and Attorney Foster made my family and I feel as though we were her only clients. Attorney Foster helped my family gain custody of our grandchildren while addressing all of our grandchildren’s needs and she coordinated agreements as needed for each situation that developed, which were fair and practical for all parties involved. This made very stressful situations less stressful and we able to focus on what was important which was the care of our grandchildren. As time went on I realized I had someone on my side who was giving so much dedication, commitment and support to all of our family’s needs and that started to make me feel invincible instead of vulnerable. Together Attorney Erica Foster and I spent years overcoming the many obstacles that my family and I had to endure to finally achieve what we set out to accomplish in the first place. The fees we paid were very reasonable for the amount of happiness and comfort she successfully brought to my family. Attorney Foster’s Firm is and was conveniently located and it is also accessible from all areas which made it very easy and comfortable each time we visited. Today I am very happy and proud to say Attorney Erica Foster feels more like a friend of the family. Attorney Erica Foster is one of the best! I highly recommend her firm to anyone in need of her services. Tammy

Extremely intelligent and out of the box thinking lawyer. He's truly one of a kind and represents everything that a lawyer SHOULD BE. He's passionate about his clients and goes above and beyond. Hiring him was a blessing as he helped shed light on corruption. He does not give up, he's willing to do whatever it takes, he's honest and most importantly he listens.

I hired Attorney David Broderick to represent me in a request to terminate alimony. Attorney Broderick was very knowledgeable about the changes in law for Alimony as I was divorced many years ago. I was able to get my support obligation fully terminated. David was always responsive to my calls and emails. I was impressed with his oral argument in court and his overall handling of my case. I highly recommend him and his firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of DANVERS, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
