I highly recommend Attorney Rachel Silvia for any family law matters and custody issues. From start to finish she provided me with honesty, compassion and excellent legal advice during one of the most challenging times in my life. She is highly responsive and was able to communicate effectively with all parties involved, including an out of state attorney. The entire team at Ryan & Faenza was helpful every step of the way. Their patience, kindness and dedication to their clients doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you Rachel for everything you’ve done for my family and I over the past two years, I’m forever grateful! You rock!!

The ending of very long relationships can be complicated and difficult on so many levels. Healthy respect and empathy seemed to be in short supply during a very short conversation I had with Attorney Silvia. I am dealing with some very difficult fallout and am trying to find my way forward. Attorney Silvia showed no understanding, compassion or interest. It is fair for someone to feel that they are not a good match. But an empathetic caring person would make suggestions for other attorneys or other ways of dealing with the situation. Seem seems sweet and friendly, but what she was saying was rather judgmental based on a real lack of information and understanding. Possibly she was triggered by what I brought up. I certainly felt deeply dispirited after our conversation.

Attorney Silvia was kind and thoughtful. Getting divorced is never easy - Attorney Silvia was not only looking out for my best interest legally but also gave me the confidence to speak freely and honestly about my case without fear of judgement. Her counsel was both comforting and empowering. She was always available to discuss my case and was very honest and forthright with information regarding the legal options and challenges that could be presented. Attorney Silvia is extremely detailed and organized - something I tend to lack - it was helpful to have her direction and patience as the proceedings commenced. Her advice and counsel gave me a quick, fair and efficient legal path for dissolution of my marriage. A very difficult time made much less difficult because of her work. I would highly recommend Attorney Silvia - I can't say enough good things about her tremendous work and kindness.

I called Elaine for advice regarding a personal financial situation. Elaine spent a half hour on the phone with me and gave me a lot of very good advice. I am now making a confident decision on how to proceed thanks to her time and wisdom, guided by experience. She did not charge me a dime for her time and was a very patient listener. Grateful!

My husband and I had to file for Chapter 13 Bankruptcy - it was a very difficult and emotional decision. Elaine helped us through the entire procedure and patiently explained how everything worked. Her natural kindness and understanding was evident and helped us feel that we were going to get through this. In the end, everything went very smoothly and we were very pleased with the outcome. We couldn't have asked for a better lawyer. We would recommend Elaine to anyone contemplating bankruptcy - give her a call, she will help you.

Susan Saliba helped us get a green card for my husband. She was professional, helpful, and kept us up-to-date with all contact with USCIS. She knows the process very well and was able to answer our many questions/concerns. She was easily available returning calls and emails within the day or next. She made the process as streamlined as possible. We would recommend Ms. Saliba to anyone working through the green card process.

I was involved in a car accident and thought my injuries would eventually go away. When they did not I called Mr. Ranallo and he was able to get me an appointment for therapy on the same day! He kept me informed on what was happening with my car and the insurance company and always made himself available to answer my questions. He was even able to obtain a settlement for my injury.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Dedham, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
