I highly recommend Mildred. I couldn't of ask for my case to go more smoothly and painless then it did. She walked me through everything I needed to do step by step and explained everything clearly leaving me feeling confident in every decision. When I had a question for her she responded quickly and really made me feel as if she was available when ever I needed. I trusted her with every issue and felt at ease doing so. I felt the cost of her services were well worth it. She gave me a timeline of when my case would be over and it was done exactly when she predicted. I felt comfortable with Mildred, she was personable when needed and professional when needed. If I ever need another lawyer i know I will be hiring Mildred again.

As I walked into Mildred’s office for the first time, my feelings of nervousness and embarrassment about my need for a personal lawyer quickly dissipated. Her kind nature is welcoming and her warm personality reassuring. She seems to understand immediately the myriad emotions that accompany the work to be done with her clients. Her expertise and expansive knowledge base instilled great confidence as I moved through the process of preparing for court. She covered every base, explained every option in detail and supported me in my moments of trepidation and stress. She was always available to answer questions and clarify information via telephone and e-mail. Fortunately, for me, it was a professional relationship that held all the qualities of a personal connection with someone who understood my needs, fears and desired outcomes. On the morning when we were scheduled to appear in court, Mildred was fully prepared and was able to share insight about the process, the judge, the venue and the subsequent proceedings. Her familiarity with the system breeds comfort. What could have been a highly stressful time for me was made easier by her gift of bringing conversation and laughter into the most unfamiliar and potentially tense situations. My first trip to Mildred’s office was seven years ago. I have since asked her advice and spoken to her informally. If ever I have need of a lawyer, she is the person with whom I would work and trust. I do not hesitate to share her information or to give her shining recommendations. You will be more than satisfied with your choice and Mildred will surely surpass your expectations. If you are looking for someone with high integrity who is conscientious, amiable, trustworthy, efficient and simply delightful in her very non-threatening approach, then Mildred may be the perfect choice for you. Her rates are reasonable and her work thorough and comprehensive. She is well versed in multiple facets of the law and is able to address concerns and questions, crossing borders into various specialties, to offer a holistic view of your situation. Good luck.

I highly recommend Mildred Phillips; she tells it like it is, personable, honest, and reliable. I have worked with her for almost two years; first she filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy for me in 2009. I found Mildred to be very thorough and accurate. She took the time to make sure I new what I was reading or signing and that I didn’t miss any valuable information. The whole process went smooth from beginning to end. I could really tell she new the law in more than just bankruptcy in a lot of different areas of the law. So in time I started calling her to ask her Real Estate questions and soon realizing how valuable her knowledge would be for me, I decided to work as a Realtor under her. Because of being a Realtor for the past 8 years I’ve worked with quite a bit of lawyers and I find Mildred to be in the top three she goes the extra mile for you and makes sure she is following the law and that you understand it. I have also had her draw up a separation agreement and plan to soon have her write my will and all that goes along with that. I believe you will find it delight to work with her as I have.

Susan Saliba helped us get a green card for my husband. She was professional, helpful, and kept us up-to-date with all contact with USCIS. She knows the process very well and was able to answer our many questions/concerns. She was easily available returning calls and emails within the day or next. She made the process as streamlined as possible. We would recommend Ms. Saliba to anyone working through the green card process.

I was involved in a car accident and thought my injuries would eventually go away. When they did not I called Mr. Ranallo and he was able to get me an appointment for therapy on the same day! He kept me informed on what was happening with my car and the insurance company and always made himself available to answer my questions. He was even able to obtain a settlement for my injury.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Dedham, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
