Let me just start off by saying my case was one of those cases no man ever wants to be charged with not only was I charged for something horrible but I was charged for something I didn’t do , something that someone said that wasn’t true & for a long 5 plus years I was fighting the case John was not only a lawyer to me but he was a friend , and by the time the case was over and he got me a NOT Guilty he became family , this man is not only good hearted he believes in his clients , and let me tell you I’m not an easy client I’m a stress box I’m annoying I ask 100 questions a hour not just in person but on the phone I kept stressing hard walking in & out of the court room on breaks even when he told me don’t leave the court room I still left because I was stressed looking for a new question to ask , probably a question I already had asked him 100 times lol but the man never got upset never was angry always had a smile and always answered my question over and over if it gave me peace of mind to ask he would answer , never lead me the wrong way never sugar coated anything was always real with me, & the thing I believe was most amazing also was that he was court appointed & anyone who’s been in the court system knows what we all think damn court appointed not paid for im screwed but not with John he treated my case like I paid him $100,000 dollars never gave up on me & when I say I was up against it tsss I was up against it he took care of me when no one else would and in the end GOD came threw & he came threw !!!!! NOT GUILTY so when I say I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MAN & his law firm I really mean it … so John if your reading this one day thank you because you saved my life and got me back to my family and got me back to me !! Let's face it you could hire the most expensive attorney you can find but doesn't guarantee you quality service. Like any other profession thier work day becomes routine and they can just be going threw the motions for a paycheck .Having a personal friend that is a court appointed attorney,I'm well aware of what little effort a lot of attorneys put into any particular case. Matthew not only explained everything to me but did so with passion. This is extremely important, otherwise your attorney is just going threw the motions. Thaw day we appeared in court I had asked about a date on a future case. Matthew wasted no time finding the date for me but more important had it included with the present case. He saved me from having to return to court but also did this for free. I think I've established that Matthew enjoys his work and is a great guy but that doesnt get you off the charge. Well without giving too much deatail about my case. I was looking at drug testing ,suspended license for a year, supervised probation, weekly counseling, and if course a drug convixtion on my record. Thanks to Matthew ,I have my license ,I don't have to get tested ( I would pass) or go to counseling ,I don't have any supervised probation and most important ,I don't have a drug conviction on my record. Being a full time student ,I could not afford to get this charge or else I would lose my financial aid. He also saved me a bunch of money on the second case which was driving violations. I will never loom elsewhere for an attorney even though I have a personal friend that would work for me at no charge. Whether it is for a driving offence, criminal ,or family court, you want Matthew by your side. I know he will be on mine. Thanks for reading and good luck

When your child undergoes an emotionally challenging ordeal such as a divorce, parents often experience a sense of helplessness. In our case it was the hope that our daughter would be represented by competent counsel exhibiting tenacity when required yet empathy and compassion when warranted. We were extremely fortunate when Laurie Mullen was recommended to us. During our initial consultation, she alleviated much of our anxiety and we were made confident she would represent our daughter’s best interests. Throughout this overwhelming process she was both professional and tenacious in her efforts and supportive as family in her demeanor. As parents we are profoundly grateful for her expertise and guidance in support of our daughter. Due to her proficiency in family law and her temperament in negotiations in this recent domestic matter, we enthusiastically and without reservation recommend the law office of Laurie P. Mullen Esq.

Laurie was open and honest about what to expect from day one. I fully understood what was expected of me moving through the process of divorce. She fully recognizes that it is so difficult for people to travel this road but never let me get stuck. She provided solid guidance but left the decision-making to me. When I was making decisions that may not be the best for me in the long run she was clear that I could do that but also outlined the impact those decisions might have. Laurie was also very respectful of coming at this in a collaborative and non-confrontational manner with my ex and their lawyer. I was very concerned about drama and this manner decreased the risk of that. (she was very well prepared to stand up and move to litigation and press some points should it have become necessary) Can't express how grateful I am to her.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fall River, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
