Lauren was able to solve our estate issue when 3 others lawyers could not find a solution. She did everything she said she would do in a timely manner. She was helpful, available, patient, and knowlegable.

My mom had a stroke and we wanted to protect her home from all the medical fees she was incurring. Lauren said that we needed to (a) sell the house, (b) put the money in a trust, and (c) get on MassHealth. She said we could avoid a MassHealth lien on the house by just stating that the proceeds of the sale were going into a trust. That way the money from the sale of the house would be protected. Unfortunately we had some problems: (1) we could not sell the house quickly, (2) my mom's application for MassHealth was rejected about 6 times over a span of a year despite the fact that we submitted all requested information each time, and (3) the nursing home filed a lawsuit against us for failure to pay the 'private pay' amount, and (4) MassHealth eventually put a lien on the house. Problem (1) was due to the market and outside of Lauren’s control. Problem (2) was because, Lauren said, that my mom's investments were a bit unusual and the investment company could not provide the necessary documents. Problem (3) was, as Lauren said, a frivolous lawsuit because the nursing home was aware we were in the process of applying for MassHealth. The summons was handled well since we were able to avoid going to trial though we did incur legal expenses. Problem (4) was because the 'intent to sell' protection against liens was only good for 6 months or so. So it was partly due to problem (1) but also a lack of communication about the impending deadline should the house not be sold by such-and-such a date. Over all, I was impressed by Lauren's knowledge of the process and professional demeanor. The negatives were the MassHealth application delays and eventual lien on my mom’s house, and the lawsuit by the nursing home. I believe ours was a difficult case that Lauren handled fairly well. However, in the end, very little of the money from the sale of the house was left after medical and legal expenses.

I have worked with Lauren Keane Dowley on a number of Medicaid application cases in the last few years. Attorney Dowley is knowledgeable in her field all areas of the law, especially in elder law and Medicaid, and has been influential in helping to resolve many issues with MassHealth and obtaining approvals on Medicaid applications. She has always been very professional to deal with, has a diligent work ethic and responds to clients in a timely fashion. Her staff is courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend Attorney Dowley to anyone in need of legal services.

I utilized Atty. Keane Dowley's services on 2 separate occasions for estate planning/advanced directives and a recent real estate transaction. Regarding the latter, despite having literally been out of the country on a personal vacation, she initiated the review of the purchase and sales agreement for my potential new home. The matter was more complicated than it should have been secondary to the seller being represented by a relocation company. An agreement was reached and I'm set to close on the property at the end of this month. I would highly recommend Atty. Keane Dowley.

I had needed a Real Estate attorney to work with my lender to transfer titles currently held in probate. I had a lender and 2 different probate attorneys, and within 24 hours of gathering all the facts of what was required, she was the only person to come forth to inform me that the whole process I was in was mishandled and not the correct way to handle things. I have sent emails, left calls - and I swear its been a reply within 2 minutes. She is busy, but she really could tell I was so furious and upset, she made sure to get back to me fast, calm me down and talk me through what I needed. If you need a Real Estate attorney, you want someone thorough and FAST. Most of all - patient and super informed in her field. She was asking me to get things to her so quickly, I could not believe her turnaround and attentiveness. I have know Gail for a few years, but this is the first professional matter I had hired her for. I am recommending her to everyone I know, realtors, lenders, etc. She is the best!

I can't speak highly enough about Laurel Bretta of Bretta Law Advisors, PC. I was in a real mess and in way over my head with the Mass Dept of Revenue and estate tax forms that needed to be filed upon my mother's death, and having absolutely no clue how complicated a process it can be. From my first meeting with Laurel, I felt assured that she was the one who was going to get the job done. And that she did! Laurel was prompt, always accessible, very responsive, knowledgeable, experienced, understanding, and calmingly confident. Staff member Paula was professional, helpful, and pleasant as well. Can communicate via phone, email, or text which is extremely convenient. I'd use Laurel Bretta's law practice again in a heartbeat, no hesitation, and as a matter of fact, I intend to use her law practice to help me with my estate planning to avoid any potential headaches for my son and granddaughter.

Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Medford, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
