I recommend Cathleen Collins without hesitation. As a survivor of domestic abuse, my divorce had additional complexities. Cathleen has the wonderful combination of compassion with a pragmatic approach. She is well respected by other attorneys and in the court system. When I hear about what other survivors have to go through during their divorce journey, I feel so lucky that I had Cathleen as my attorney. She took away a level of stress - that is priceless.

We had Dave set up a family trust for us. He and his office staff are very helpful and professional. Everything was explained to us so we were able to understand exactly what we should do. I would definitely recommend Lucas Law Associates. They are the best!!

My family relocated to Melrose from California in 2019 and bought a house. David Lucas and staff helped us with the Purchase and Sales contract, and because we were so pleased with the work they did, we subsequently engaged with them to update our estate planning documents (will, trust, healthcare proxy, etc.). I cannot review them highly enough. Both of the attorneys at the firm and the office support staff were highly professional, courteous, and patient with us, explaining complex documents and drawing from their legal experiences to showcase specific examples that led them to include certain provisions in the materials for their clients. Not only did they help us with the purchase of our (beloved) new home and help us navigate some difficult issues in the drawing up of our estate paperwork, but they are now shepherding my elderly parents through the same process. At all times, Mr. Lucas and his staff conduct themselves professionally and with compassion. They are highly responsive and adept at guiding their clients through a dizzying web of legal issues. Their rates are also reasonable and in-line with other law firms we researched in the area.

I have worked with John on real estate and end of life issues. His accessibility made both processes easier and he had a great knack to use terminology that a non lawyer would understand. When I needed papers drawn up and signed and witnessed he showed up at my house with that witness within hours and saved us YEARS of probate aggravation. I would give him the benefit of the doubt on all my future law needs.

John is able to understand my specific needs and never tried to make my situation fit into some stereotype. He can communicate the intricacies of law in a way that is easy to understand. He is professional and approachable, and he takes the time to make sure his clients understand the process and every step involved. He explains potential solutions, challenges and outcomes in a clear and concise manner. John Martino is an excellent Attorney - he has earned my trust and i will look to him first when the need arises.

I have hired John to assist on three real estate transactions, over the past two years, pertaining to our family trust and downsizing for my mother. I am within an hour of our family home, where my mother resided, but was not available to be on hand as much I would have preferred to be able to oversee the transactions. John was instrumental in coordinating and overseeing the process, and provided beneficial guidance and the necessary legal services to facilitate the transactions smooth progress. His knowledge of and relationships with some of the local banks, real estate agents, and attorneys involved was very helpful in keeping the process moving forward. I have recommended John to both family and friends for their legal needs and will continue to contact him for his assistance in my own pertinent legal matters.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Melrose, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
