He is all about making a quick buck. Didn’t care about me or my issues and the results showed it. He was near impossible to reach and when I did reach him he couldn’t get off the phone fast enough. Wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy.

I was appointed Alan Medeiros as a public defender, by the Taunton District Court, where it just so happens he has a humongous law practice and is a Taunton city councilor. His lack of communication initially concerned me, as he NEVER CALLED ME, didn’t return phone calls and such. So I had a friend, a civil attorney reach out to him and feel him out. Her and I were on different phones, in different States, his voicemail came on, I gave him permission to speak to my good friend. She called me about 15 minutes later and said Alan sounded on point, and if he didn’t reach out to me in Feb or March 2021, to call him. The first week of May I got my phone number changed, so I called his office, gave his secretary my new number, and asked her to have Alan call me at his earliest convenience. She said she would. Later on that day, his secretary called me and said Alan would get in touch with me the following day. He never called the following day nor did I hear from him for 5 weeks. I was told by a friend that’s also a criminal lawyer, I had a hearing on June 15th, had I heard from my lawyer yet. I said no, but the last time I spoke with him he fabricated a lie and said I had threatened his secretary. I said what? Threatened her how? At which point he didn’t know what to say. My friend said that’s a huge red flag, and the fact he never informed me about my hearing for June 15th, to fire him, be present at the hearing then report him to every agency I can, he gave me a printout of agencies where I should report him, that’s it’s illegal for him to keep such an important date from me, and he then agreed, Patti, he is working with the Taunton Police.just to be sure, I called Alan’s office back later that day June 11,2021 he wasn’t in, I asked his secretary, have I ever threatened you? (Knowing I didn’t) she said oh my god no, why do you ask? I said because Alan told me that I did. And I know I didn’t. Then this lovely woman changed her tune, well, maybe you called here one day and weren’t in a great mood, and did. Ok. If I threatened a lawyers secretary, I would’ve been charged with making threats and Mr. Medeiros would have withdrawn from my case. He called me back and said nothing happening, knowing I did have a hearing date set for the following Tuesday, June 15th, I called him back a second time, he said I told you nothings scheduled for you, the court is backed up. So I fired a public defender. Pretender is more like it. Warning: if you are criminally charged out of Taunton District Court, and get Alan Medeiros from Medeiros and Medeiros in Taunton, my honest suggestion, ask for another public defender. If I didn’t show my presence in the zoom court on that morning, a warrant would’ve been issued for my arrest. Then I would’ve been held in Framingham State Prison, until my next hearing date, with a new charge and thats just where the Taunton police and Alan Medeiros wanted me. For a lawyer to never call you, keep you informed especially of the hearing date that would put one in prison and also lie and say you threatened his secretary, when you didn’t. He’s no good. FIRED !

Alan and his staff went above and beyond for my mother in her last days. When several attorneys advised that nothing could be done for her, Alan suggested and implemented several solutions that made everything easier for my family. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to establish a concise but thorough estate plan for their family.

After a very bad experience with another lawyer, I found Karol S Hickey. Booking an appointment with her was the best decision on my life. On our first meeting I really believed in Karol and she showed me how human and knolageble she was how to help me with my immigration process. Also she’s not expensive, her price is very reasonable. the attorney I had before charged me $5000 more then Karol. I got all my process done in only 4 month. shes the best and I really will trust her and recommend her as long as I live

Karol is amazing and I would absolutely recommend her to anyone! She helped my wife and I through the entire immigration process and with her help, advice and advocacy it was as easy as it could be! This process is not something that you would want to navigate on your own and we were lucky we had her on our side! We received the residency card in I think record time! Thanks very much Karol, I wish you the best!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Taunton, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
