Can’t say enough great things about Briana! I originally chose Briana due to her experience with tenant/landlord disputes in Massachusetts. Recently moving to the state, I was confused about several laws and had a landlord who seemed to be using her own interpretation of the law to neglect her responsibilities. I had spoken to a lawyer previously, and gotten nowhere, so I wasn’t expecting much this time around. Briana completely blew me away with her knowledge, compassion, and follow through. She helped guide me through which laws protected me and what steps I could take to accelerate the complaint. She also took time to read through all of my communications with my landlord. Not only that, but she actually found portions of my lease that the prior lawyer had overlooked. My ordeal started with feeling overwhelmed and stressed out, and ended with empowerment and understanding. Once things were resolved, I didn’t expect any further communications, but Briana went out of her way to check in one final time. Absolutely wonderful customer service and I would recommend her to anyone who is having similar issues. Highly recommend and plan on using her services again if needed in the future.

We worked with Briana on a standard will and power of attorney documents, but also review of important employment paperwork. Impressed with her attention to detail and knowledge, but also appreciated her personable demeanor and patience in working through technical details.

My wife and I recently consulted  Attorney Briana Heath. Briana's expertise and experience were evident in the way she handled our situation. She was able to remedy the situation without the need of legal action and gave us the peace of mind that was needed. We recommend Briana for anyone in need of legal assistance.

I am extremely pleased with the services I received from Dwayne. I required a Trust and Will for my Estate Plan. Dwayne was knowledgeable and professional from the first consultation to the closing. He did an amazing job overviewing and explaining my Trust options. When I had additional questions, he was patient and provided detailed explanations. The entire process was completed within weeks. If I require an estate lawyer in the future, I will be using Dwayne again. I would highly recommend him for any Estate Planning services needed.

Laura Gillis is appropriately fierce and easy to work with. The “onboarding process” as a client was seamless and I received a timely appointment. Laura reviewed our documents thoroughly and was well prepared for our first meeting. She is definitely a subject matter expert with the IEP process and special education testing protocols and results. In addition, she helped identify the appropriate third party resources to support our family. I would highly recommend working with Laura for anyone wanting to help their children in their academic journey.

Laura was exactly the right person for us. She is direct and let us know the facts and the situation without sugar-coating. Her depth of knowledge in her area is terrific, and the opinions she gave were very helpful even when they were not what we hoped for. She was able to get us an excellent outcome.

“I retained Doug Watson on a referral from a friend and it’s one of the best decisions I ever made. Doug has an honest, pragmatic and practical style that helped me understand and navigate the court system. He recognizes opportunities, is extremely professional, well-spoken and most importantly- tenacious. I have already referred Doug Watson to others in need.” I wouldn’t walk into the courtroom without him!” -L.G.

I highly recommend Douglas Watson. He has been a strong and caring advocate for the various legal situations I've been faced with. He has helped immensely with apartment leases for our children, home purchases for us. Mr. Watson also sensitively assisted my 90-year-old mother through complicated estate planning; his creative and vast understanding of the law is balanced by a common sense knowledge of human behavior.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Topsfield, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
