We used Jill when we were dealing with an IEP eligibility issue. She was enormously helpful. She was compassionate, highly competent and amazingly efficient in how she handled our situation. I was impressed by her honesty and integrity. I was also impressed at how she was able to take a lot of complex intake and synthesize a coherent and well organized case. She was always highly responsive. I would use her again and have recommended her to others as she was so effective for us.

Jill was a tremendous help to our family as we struggled to understand our young son's learning disability and secure him the most appropriate placement. Jill worked tirelessly with us to understand test results, school placements, IEPS, etc. and was always available to talk through various scenarios that would be best for our son and family. She was very knowledgeable of resources available and connected us with high-quality local professionals. Jill understands not only the professional and legal in's and out's regarding learning disabilities, but is also very empathetic which is so important since emotions around rights and advocacy can run high for everyone. Ultimately, Jill was able to secure a very fair placement for our son for which we are forever grateful. In the five years we worked together, we were true partners. I trusted her legal advice and came to know her as friend.

Jill has represented our daughter in a lengthy process with a town who had repeatedly denied her services. We are in a new place altogether where things have turned around. I highly recommend engaging her before you sign anything with the school system if you are seeking eligibility for an IEP. She knows what she is doing, and she can help you navigate the intricacies. Additionally, I really appreciated her ability to connect with my daughter and establish trust, which was very important.

Jill has represented me in connection with my autistic daughter's educational needs for over 10 years. Jill first represented me in connection with my unilateral private placement of my daughter at a private school and efforts to seek funding from the public school. Jill is an outstanding individual and an extremely intelligent lawyer. She has consistently delivered high quality work product and superior service to our family. She has strong problem solving skills and has consistently exhibited excellent judgment when counseling our family through very difficult issues. Jill is very organized and efficient in her work and always responsive to my daughters' needs. With Jill by my side, I always feel prepared for new educational challenges that my daughter's disability presents. My daughter has made great progress over the years and Jill's legal advice has played a key role in my daughter's ability to make progress.

I am extremely pleased with the services I received from Dwayne. I required a Trust and Will for my Estate Plan. Dwayne was knowledgeable and professional from the first consultation to the closing. He did an amazing job overviewing and explaining my Trust options. When I had additional questions, he was patient and provided detailed explanations. The entire process was completed within weeks. If I require an estate lawyer in the future, I will be using Dwayne again. I would highly recommend him for any Estate Planning services needed.

Laura Gillis is appropriately fierce and easy to work with. The “onboarding process” as a client was seamless and I received a timely appointment. Laura reviewed our documents thoroughly and was well prepared for our first meeting. She is definitely a subject matter expert with the IEP process and special education testing protocols and results. In addition, she helped identify the appropriate third party resources to support our family. I would highly recommend working with Laura for anyone wanting to help their children in their academic journey.

Laura was exactly the right person for us. She is direct and let us know the facts and the situation without sugar-coating. Her depth of knowledge in her area is terrific, and the opinions she gave were very helpful even when they were not what we hoped for. She was able to get us an excellent outcome.

“I retained Doug Watson on a referral from a friend and it’s one of the best decisions I ever made. Doug has an honest, pragmatic and practical style that helped me understand and navigate the court system. He recognizes opportunities, is extremely professional, well-spoken and most importantly- tenacious. I have already referred Doug Watson to others in need.” I wouldn’t walk into the courtroom without him!” -L.G.

I highly recommend Douglas Watson. He has been a strong and caring advocate for the various legal situations I've been faced with. He has helped immensely with apartment leases for our children, home purchases for us. Mr. Watson also sensitively assisted my 90-year-old mother through complicated estate planning; his creative and vast understanding of the law is balanced by a common sense knowledge of human behavior.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Topsfield, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
