Patrick Curley is simply amazing! We were in the process of applying for Mass Health for our 98 year old mom who had recently been admitted to a nursing home facility and we ran into issues with a family trust. Patrick had reviewed the trust for us a few years prior to this admission and we were very pleased with his work. We didn't hesitate to reach out to him for his help. This was the best decision we could have made. From the moment we explained what the issues were he was on board. He took the pressure and stress of this daunting process away and went to work. He is so easy to work with and understanding in so many ways. He is a true professional in every sense of the word. Always there if you need him to answer questions or give advice. Thanks to Patrick we were successful in getting our mom approved for Mass Health. I am certain that without Patrick's help this may not have been the outcome. Thank you so much Patrick for everything! Joyce, Janice and Linda

We had a relatively complex estate issue surrounding a living trust and it was clear to see that we needed urgent help. Thankfully, we found the law office of Patrick Hurley who specializes in elder care and MassHealth Insurance. He and his team have been outstanding in the way they were able to handle our situation and put our minds at ease right from our first phone call with Deb Tura. After multiple calls and remote meetings (due to covid-19) Patrick and his team helped us to understand the cumbersome process in order to obtain MassHealth Insurance for our Mom. Without their help, knowledge and guidance, we would still be struggling - and in the wrong direction! Not only did he get our Mom on MassHealth, but he also negotiated a very substantial discount with the nursing home due to a one month gap difference in coverage. Professional, caring and extremely knowledgeable is the best way I can honestly describe Patrick Hurley and his team. We couldn't be more pleased with our experience. If you need elder care help, or MassHealth Insurance, Patrick Curley and his team are the answers. You won't be disappointed!! We would like to Thank the entire Curley Law Firm for your time, effort, support and help throughout the MassHealth process for our mother. Sincerely, The Lotti Family

Patrick and the team at Curley are amazing! From my early inquiries with Debbie all the way to the finish line their assistance was always generous, thoughtful, and considerate. My 77 year old mom lives at home alone and is having health issues. With the Curley teams help we got her estate planning done and got her on MassHealth. She now gets care through the state for 20 hours a day. It was a struggle to get the overnight care in place but Curley advocated for our family and my mom and now we can be sure that she is being cared for and her future at her own home is secure. Thanks team!

I feel extremely fortunate that my family had the help of Patrick and the Curley Law Firm. Both he and Debbie were diligent and steadfast in their efforts to gain MassHealth assistance for my mother. Patrick was always responsive, answered our questions and I felt like our case was his top priority. His expertise and understanding were a source of reassurance from our first meeting. My mother can remain in her home with the care she needs thanks to the help we received. Navigating an elder’s care can be daunting, but Patrick and his team offered invaluable assistance and I highly recommend the Curley Law Firm.

Last year Curley Law Firm LLP set up a Trust for my mother and over the last few months they helped me with the sale of her house. I was very happy with how smoothly things went. Patrick and his staff were so professional. Patrick took the time to explain things to me and gave me the peace of mind I needed to complete the sale. I highly recommend Patrick and his team.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Wakefield, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
